Gujarat Police Introduces AI Tool for Narcotics Investigations

NARIT AI: A New Era in Drug Case Management

The Gujarat Police have rolled out a revolutionary artificial intelligence system known as NARIT AI (Narcotics Analysis & RAG-based Investigation Tool). This initiative marks Gujarat as the first Indian state police to implement AI technology in narcotics investigations, aiming to enhance the management of drug-related cases and increase conviction rates.

This innovative system employs Retrieval Augmented Generation (RAG) technology, which enables it to analyze First Information Reports (FIRs) against a secure database containing Supreme Court and High Court decisions, legal statutes, and government directives. Unlike typical open-source AI systems, NARIT AI maintains data privacy by not relying on general internet sources, thus reducing the risk of incorrect legal interpretations.

The AI tool generates detailed reports that highlight both the strengths and weaknesses of narcotics cases, offering an evidence checklist and predicting potential defense arguments in court. This feature aims to equip prosecutors with the necessary resources to effectively counter defense strategies.

Government Support for Anti-Drug Efforts

Deputy Chief Minister Harsh Sanghvi has underscored the significance of this technological advancement in Gujarat’s fight against drug crimes. He stated, “Gujarat state is determined to eliminate drug-related crimes. We are committed to doing whatever it takes to dismantle this entire network. All necessary arrangements have been made to ensure effective investigation of drug-related crimes and to build a strong legal case against the accused, and with the help of technology, this work will become even stronger.”

Addressing Challenges in Narcotics Investigations

According to Western Railway Vadodara SP Abhay Soni, NARIT AI addresses long-standing challenges within drug investigations, particularly the procedural missteps that have previously led to acquittals despite substantial evidence. “Earlier, investigations were carried out only by specially trained police staff, which led to workload and administrative delays. This tool will act as a ‘force multiplier’ by utilizing advanced RAG-based AI technology and will empower every investigating officer to conduct proper investigations as per rules, thereby improving the conviction rate in NDPS cases,” Soni explained.

The implementation of NARIT AI is expected to significantly enhance the investigation process, bridging procedural gaps that have historically resulted in acquittals. The tool will guide officers in identifying weaknesses in FIRs, advising them on necessary actions, and providing a checklist of evidence required to strengthen their cases.
