Green Corridor Enables Heart Transplant for Young Man in Critical Condition

Emergency Operation Details

In a rapid response operation, a donor heart was transported 98 kilometers from Rohtak to Delhi in 85 minutes on Thursday, providing a second chance for a 26-year-old male facing end-stage heart failure.

The heart was conveyed through a green corridor established from Pandit Bhagwat Dayal Sharma Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) in Rohtak to the Fortis Escorts Heart Institute located in Okhla, Delhi. Local police along the route coordinated efforts to clear traffic, ensuring timely delivery within the critical time frame required for organ viability.

Patient’s Condition

The patient was diagnosed with advanced dilated cardiomyopathy, a condition in which the heart becomes weakened and is unable to effectively pump blood. As existing treatment options were exhausted, a heart transplant emerged as his only viable option for survival.

Donor Details

The donor, a 37-year-old man, had been found unconscious and was admitted to PGIMS Rohtak with a severe brain hemorrhage. Following the designation of brain death, his family consented to organ donation, facilitating multiple transplants.

Organ retrieval was initiated around 2:20 PM, with the heart departing Rohtak at 2:50 PM and successfully arriving at the Delhi hospital by 4:15 PM. The coordination between Delhi and Rohtak police played a pivotal role in ensuring the rapid transit of the organ.

Upon arrival, the transplant was conducted without delay, and the patient is currently under careful observation in the intensive care unit (ICU).

Additional Organ Allocation

In accordance with established protocols, other donor organs were also allocated. Lungs went to Artemis Hospital, while the liver and pancreas were designated for the All India Institute of Medical Sciences. Kidneys and corneas were retained at PGIMS Rohtak for further use.
