Shots Fired Near ULFA(I) Chief’s Residence in Assam
Incident Details
Reports indicate that shots were fired near the paternal residence of Paresh Baruah, the chief of the militant group ULFA(I), in Dibrugarh district, Assam. Family members claimed that two rounds of blank gunfire were heard in the vicinity of the house located in Jerai Gaon shortly after midnight on Monday.
Bimal Baruah, Paresh Baruah’s brother, stated that despite the noise, no footage was captured on the CCTV systems installed at their residence. He suggested that the incident appeared to be an attempt to instigate unrest in the area.
Police Response
Following the reports of gunfire, authorities at the Chabura police station have been notified, and an investigation into the event has been initiated. Police have begun examining the circumstances surrounding the incident.
Context of the Incident
This occurrence comes shortly after the return of Arunodoi Dohotia, also known as ‘Arunodoi Asom’, who had previously been a close associate of Paresh Baruah. Dohotia, who had surrendered several months ago, recently returned to his home in the same locality after spending time in militant camps in Myanmar.
The ULFA(I), under the leadership of Paresh Baruah, remains the only militant group in Assam that has not engaged in peace talks with the government, maintaining its stance on armed resistance.
