Chartered Accountant Accuses Nashik ‘Godman’ Ashok Kharat Of Rs 8.76 Crore Fraud
Cheating Complaint Filed
A chartered accountant has lodged a cheating complaint against Ashok Kharat, a self-proclaimed godman, who is currently in custody facing a rape allegation. The complaint outlines a case of financial fraud amounting to over Rs 8.76 crore.
The complaint was submitted by Lalit Pophale, identified as Kharat’s chartered accountant. Pophale alleged that Kharat deceived him by soliciting funds under the pretense of conducting religious rituals and ceremonies.
Investigation Initiated
According to sources, the Special Investigation Team (SIT) has taken action by registering the complaint and initiating an investigation into the reported financial irregularities.
Investigators revealed that Pophale held the position of trustee in Kharat’s Shivnika organization, a requirement necessitated by having a chartered accountant for the trust. The complaint claims that Kharat exploited this relationship to perpetrate the alleged fraud.
Allegations on Multiple Fronts
The complaint suggests that Kharat’s fraudulent activities impacted not only the general public but also individuals closely associated with him.
Kharat, who previously served as a Merchant Navy officer and referred to himself as “Captain,” was apprehended on March 17 following a woman’s accusation of sexual assault spanning three years. During the course of the investigation, law enforcement authorities uncovered 58 videos from a pen drive, some of which were reportedly objectionable.
Political Fallout
The controversy surrounding Kharat has had political repercussions as well. NCP leader Rupali Chakankar recently resigned from her role as president of the party’s Maharashtra women’s wing amid the unfolding situation related to Kharat.
Chakankar was associated with the Shri Shivnika Sansthan in Sinnar, Nashik district, where Kharat held the position of president, making her resignation a notable development in the ongoing case.
