TMC-EC Meeting Concludes with Tension
Brief Meeting Between TMC and Election Commission
A meeting between the Trinamool Congress (TMC) delegation and the Election Commission (EC) took place on Wednesday morning, lasting less than 10 minutes and ending on a tense note.
During the encounter, sources from the Election Commission reported that TMC MP Derek O’Brien raised his voice and directed concerns to Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, urging him not to speak.
The Chief Election Commissioner reportedly had to remind O’Brien to maintain proper decorum within the Commission, stating that “shouting and indecent behaviour is not appropriate.”
TMC’s Concerns and Accusations
Derek O’Brien articulated several issues on behalf of the TMC before the Commission commenced its response. He asserted that the upcoming polls in West Bengal should be “fear-free, violence-free, intimidation-free, inducement-free and without any chhaapa, booth jamming or source jamming.”
In response, O’Brien interrupted the Chief Election Commissioner, expressing that he had come to deliver his points rather than to listen.
The TMC delegation presented a memorandum at the beginning of the meeting, with O’Brien chosen to address the Commission as is customary for party leaders. However, his approach was characterized by a “raised voice and combative tone,” as described by an EC official.
Issues Raised by TMC
O’Brien voiced frustration over the Election Commission’s alleged failure to respond to multiple communications from his party concerning various issues, which included complaints about the transfers of senior officials within the West Bengal administration and police leading up to the elections.
Additionally, he accused the West Bengal Chief Electoral Officer of showing bias, highlighting that the CEO’s recent visit to Nandigram coincided with a visit from leaders of the BJP.
After making his arguments in what was described as an “inappropriately hot-headed manner,” O’Brien declared, “I am done speaking,” before the Chief Election Commissioner could finish addressing the concerns.
Concluding Remarks from TMC MP
As O’Brien concluded the meeting, he reportedly left the room abruptly, leaving behind a remark: “I hope you sleep soundly tonight.”
