BJP Sets Sights on Punjab Following Success in West Bengal

BJP’s Ambitions for Punjab

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is signaling its aspirations for the Punjab assembly elections after a historic victory in West Bengal. The party’s recent post on its X handle, simply stating “Next Punjab,” reflects its commitment to the region, echoing a message from West Bengal on November 14, 2025.

On the same day, the BJP achieved a significant milestone by winning 206 of the 294 seats in the West Bengal Assembly elections, thus securing more than a two-thirds majority and ending the Trinamool Congress (TMC) rule that lasted for 15 years. The political landscape in Bengal is now seen as a blueprint for potential electoral gains in Punjab.

Party Leaders Discuss Alignment Between States

As discussions emerged following the Bengal results, Sunil Jakhar, the president of Punjab BJP, articulated party sentiments, reiterating the challenge faced in Bengal and expressing optimism about replicating the success in Punjab. He emphasized that Prime Minister Narendra Modi has a deep connection with Punjab and affirmed that the BJP would reach out to every household to convey its message.

The BJP’s strategic messaging has linked its campaigns in both states. Following the ‘Poriborton Yatras’ in Bengal, the party commenced its Punjab campaign with a ‘Badlaav’ (change) rally on March 14, addressed by Union Home Minister Amit Shah in Moga. The rally drew significant attendance from rural voters across Punjab, marking a notable shift in electoral focus.

Remarks from Union Ministers and Business Leaders

The outcome in Bengal has also influenced perspectives beyond political circles. Union Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu noted the hard work and ground presence of Amit Shah, suggesting that Punjab would respond positively in the upcoming elections.

In the business community, reactions have been mixed. An industrialist from Ludhiana remarked on the unexpectedly clear majority for the BJP in Bengal and expressed that similar electoral dynamics could unfold in Punjab. Pankaj Sharma, president of the Association of Trade and Industrial Undertakings, emphasized the hope for increased business interactions with West Bengal in the future.

Rajnish Ahuja, Punjab president of the Apex Chamber of Commerce, conveyed a desire for a political alignment matching the national government, suggesting that if Bengal could achieve this, Punjab might follow suit.

Political Pushback from Opponents

Responses from Punjab’s political opposition were swift. Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann dismissed the BJP’s hopes linked to the Bengal results, asserting that Punjab voters are discerning and will exercise their rights judiciously.

Punjab Congress president Amarinder Singh Raja Warring provided a counter-narrative, stating that the Congress party would make significant gains in Punjab. He scrutinized the understanding of Punjab’s political landscape by BJP leaders, indicating that the state’s dynamics are more aligned with Tamil Nadu and Kerala than with Bengal or Assam, where polarized politics often thrive.

BJP’s Strategy Moving Forward

Despite the challenge ahead in Punjab, the BJP considers the outcomes in Bengal as a morale boost for its party workers. Jakhar projected that the results would inject energy into the party’s campaign in Punjab, underscoring allegations of ineffective governance under the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the state.

BJP national general secretary Tarun Chugh expressed confidence that under Modi’s leadership, the party would establish itself in Punjab, advocating for a more robust local governance structure.

The BJP aims to strengthen its position in Punjab, having previously held only two seats in the Vidhan Sabha. Following the dissolution of its longstanding alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal in 2020, the party is in the process of rebuilding its organizational framework. Recent shifts in party affiliation, including six Rajya Sabha MPs switching from AAP to BJP, indicate evolving political alliances.

Overall, while the BJP attempts to establish a direct correlation between its successes in Bengal and its ambitions in Punjab, the contrasting political environments present distinct challenges that the party must navigate.
