Krunal Pandya Discusses Innovative Bowling Techniques in IPL 2026

Unique Approach with Bouncers

Krunal Pandya showcased his unconventional strategy during a recent IPL match against the Mumbai Indians, where he achieved figures of 1 for 26. Traditionally, bouncers are a tactic favored by fast bowlers, making Pandya’s use of this delivery as a spinner quite rare in T20 cricket. He has adopted the surprise bouncer tactic to maintain an edge over opposing batters, particularly in the evolving landscape of the game.

In a post-match analysis, the RCB all-rounder highlighted that the Impact Player rule influenced his decision to employ bouncers. He noted a significant change in batting dynamics, as teams now often feature eight specialist batters. This has compelled bowlers to innovate and think strategically. “I have never shied away from trying different and new things,” he stated, emphasizing the significance of staying ahead in the game.

Strategic Mindset in Bowling

Pandya explained that his intention to use bouncers arises from a desire to outsmart the batsmen, rather than relying on a pre-defined plan. He mentioned how the composition of modern teams with consistent hitters, such as younger players like Mukul and Vaibhav, increases pressure on bowlers. “Whether it is me bending my knee and bowling that ball or a bouncer,” he added, underscoring the need for adaptability in bowling strategies.

When asked about his bouncer strategy, Pandya clarified that it is not planned ahead of time but instead relies on gut instinct. He stated, “I am someone who follows my gut. I don’t pre-plan that I want to bowl a 4th or 5th or 6th ball bouncer.” His commitment to every decision he makes is significant, reinforcing the importance of confidence in the fast-paced nature of T20 cricket. “It is more sort of a gut feeling when to bowl which ball, and I just commit 100% to that,” he said.

Team Dynamics and Performance

Pandya’s ability to restrict runs from the Mumbai Indians was complemented by his spin bowling partner, Suyash Sharma, who made crucial dismissals of Ryan Rickelton and Tilak Varma in the eighth over. He commended Suyash’s progress as a bowler and credited the continuous support from their spin bowling coach, Malolan Rangarajan, for this improvement. “He has been getting better if you see. It has been last year compared to this year; he has got better,” Pandya remarked.

He acknowledged the role of coaching in Suyash’s development, stating, “Malolan has been constantly working with him in the off-season as well as during the season.” This collaborative effort, according to Pandya, has been vital in ensuring Suyash’s adaptability and consistency, which is essential in an environment where batters are increasingly aggressive.

Upcoming Matches

Looking ahead, the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) will face the Lucknow Super Giants in their next home match on Wednesday. As the IPL season progresses, players like Pandya continue to develop and refine their strategies to contribute effectively to their team’s success.
