Wayne Rooney Critiques Mo Salah Ahead of Liverpool Farewell Match

Rooney’s Comments on Salah’s Social Media Post

Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney has criticized Mohamed Salah following the Egyptian striker’s remarks about Liverpool’s performance ahead of his farewell match at Anfield. Salah, who recently announced his departure from the club after nine years, took to social media to express his disappointment with the team’s current style of play in the Premier League.

In his post, Salah called for a return to the attacking “heavy metal” football that the club was renowned for during its more successful periods. He stated, “I have witnessed this club go from doubters to believers, and from believers to champions. It took hard work and I always did everything I could to help the club get there. Nothing makes me prouder than that. Us crumbling to yet another defeat this season was very painful and not what our fans deserve.” Salah emphasized that bringing back a winning identity should be a priority for the team.

Rooney’s Stance on Salah’s Role

Rooney, who ranks just ahead of Salah on the all-time Premier League scoring list, expressed disappointment over what he described as a “selfish” comment from the striker, particularly in light of the ongoing struggles under current manager Arne Slot. He believes that Salah’s remarks detracted from his accomplishments at the club and should have been avoided, especially as he prepares for his last game against Brighton.

“I find it sad at the end of what he’s done and what he’s achieved at Liverpool. It’s not the point for him to come out and aim another dig at Slot,” said Rooney during the Wayne Rooney Show on BBC. He added that Salah’s desire to return to a high-tempo style of play suggests that he may not be physically capable of handling such demands anymore, stating, “I don’t think Mo Salah can cope with that type of football anymore.”

Comparison to His Own Career

Rooney drew a parallel to his experiences at Manchester United, recounting a past disagreement with Sir Alex Ferguson that led to his omission from the squad in a crucial match. He suggested that similar actions should be taken regarding Salah, stating, “If I was Arne Slot, I’d have him nowhere near the stadium in the last game.” Rooney’s comments illustrate the tension surrounding Salah’s statements and the implications they have for the club’s atmosphere.

Despite Salah’s historical contributions to Liverpool as the club’s all-time goal-scorer, Rooney speculated that the player is attempting to justify his performance after a disappointing season. With Liverpool currently sitting in fifth place in the league, Salah has reportedly managed to net only seven goals in 26 appearances this term.

Rooney concluded by emphasizing that Salah’s actions were self-serving, noting that while fans may sympathize with him, a closer examination reveals that Salah is aware of the implications of his statements. “Mo Salah knows exactly what he’s doing,” he remarked.
