Security Breach at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium During IPL 2026
Incident Overview
A police report has been filed following a significant security incident at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru during the recent Indian Premier League match on April 24. Cubbon Park Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) related to the alleged sabotage of the stadium’s CCTV surveillance system.
The match in question featured Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Gujarat Titans. A routine inspection conducted prior to the match unveiled over 240 offline CCTV cameras, raising alarms about security measures in critical areas including entry points, perimeter areas, the D Corporate Stand, and concourses.
Identifying the Suspects
Authorities have identified two suspects in connection with the incident: 37-year-old Manjunath from Hiriyur in Chitradurga and 19-year-old Abdul Kalam from Uttar Pradesh. Both individuals were employed by a subcontractor for IVS Digital Solutions, a company responsible for providing digital and surveillance services at the stadium.
The formal complaint was submitted by Aditya Bhat, an employee of the AI surveillance firm Staqu Technologies Pvt Ltd, who alleged that the suspects had unlawfully entered a restricted CCTV control room and caused damage to the equipment.
Investigation and Response
In response to the complaint, police have initiated a case under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including provisions of Section 324(4). The Deputy Commissioner of Police for the Central Division, Akshay M Hakay, confirmed the incident and indicated that prompt action led to the restoration of the surveillance system.
This damage occurred around 11:30 AM on April 24, when the accused reportedly entered the stadium and disrupted the CCTV fiber connections and the video recorder. It is noted that the system was restored within one hour and did not impact the match.
Motive Behind the Act
Preliminary investigations suggest that the suspects might have acted out of frustration due to unpaid wages, reportedly amounting to Rs 10 lakh. Evidence from CCTV footage corroborates the claim that they accessed sensitive areas, including the control room and connection boxes in the parking facility.
The accused stated their actions were prompted by the lack of payment from their employer, which they had escalated through repeated reminders. They face charges for the intentional destruction of property as investigations continue.
Implications for RCB’s Upcoming Matches
As the IPL 2026 season progresses, it is noted that Royal Challengers Bengaluru’s matches at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium for this season have concluded. Consequently, the franchise will relocate to a new venue for the remainder of their home games.
RCB’s last two home matches for the year will be played in Raipur due to logistical considerations made prior to the season. The decision comes amid efforts to ensure robust security and smooth conduct of matches in light of recent events at the stadium.
