BJP Launches Bengal Manifesto Promising Uniform Civil Code and Financial Support for Women
Introduction of the Sankalp Patra
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has unveiled its manifesto, known as ‘Sankalp Patra’, in anticipation of the upcoming West Bengal Assembly elections. Union Home Minister Amit Shah announced key initiatives during the launch, including the promise to implement the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) within six months and to provide financial assistance of Rs 3,000 per month to women aimed at enhancing their financial independence. Shah described the manifesto as a guide to creating a “Sonar Bangla” and highlighted the BJP’s focus on farmers, youth, women, and government employees.
During the launch event, Shah was critical of the current ruling party, the Trinamool Congress (TMC), claiming that the past 15 years under Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee have resulted in a “nightmare” for the residents of West Bengal.
Focus on Women’s Empowerment
According to Shah, the manifesto emphasizes women’s empowerment through several initiatives. The proposed monthly financial assistance of Rs 3,000 aims to boost women’s independence, alongside a commitment to reserve 33% of positions for women within the police force and all state government jobs. Shah articulated the BJP’s goal of creating 75 lakh “Lakhpati Didis,” focusing on the economic empowerment of women. Furthermore, he stated that every mandal would feature at least one women’s police station and every police station would have a dedicated help desk for women.
Uniform Civil Code and Employee Benefits
Amit Shah reaffirmed the BJP’s intention to implement the Uniform Civil Code in West Bengal within six months of assuming office, asserting the need for a single legal framework applicable to all citizens of Bengal. He also announced plans to ensure that all government employees and salaried workers receive a dearness allowance (DA) and that the 7th Pay Commission recommendations would be put into action within 45 days should the BJP form the government.
Support for Youth and Farmers
In addressing the state’s youth, Shah announced a monthly allowance of Rs 3,000 for recent graduates. Additionally, a one-time financial aid of Rs 15,000 would be offered to assist these graduates in preparing for competitive examinations. For farmers, the BJP committed to an annual increase of Rs 3,000 to the existing PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi scheme, thus raising total assistance to Rs 9,000 per year. He further announced that the government would guarantee the procurement of 100% of farmers’ paddy at Rs 3,100 per quintal to prevent them from having to sell their crops at lower prices. A new scheme is also anticipated to ensure fair pricing for paddy, potato, and mango farmers.
Infiltration Policy
Shah outlined the BJP’s stance on infiltration, declaring a policy of “detect, delete, and deport” to address the issue. He stated that there would be a zero-tolerance approach towards infiltration, emphasizing the concerns of Bengal’s citizens regarding the state’s identity amidst ongoing infiltration. Shah assured the public that a BJP government with a full majority would take decisive action to eliminate infiltrators from Bengal.
Upcoming Election Dates
The electoral process for the West Bengal Assembly elections will occur in two phases. Voting for the first phase is scheduled for April 23, covering 152 seats, while the second phase, involving 142 seats, will take place on April 29.
