FSSAI’s Revised Clearance Process Promises Swifter Delivery of Imported Food

Changes to the Inspection Process

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has updated its clearance process for imported food, aiming to expedite delivery to consumers while maintaining high safety standards. Under the new guidelines, food consignments will undergo simultaneous inspection and testing, eliminating previous delays associated with sequential payment requirements.

In the past, the import clearance process necessitated that importers complete payments at multiple stages before inspections could take place. This sequential approach frequently resulted in delays, as consignments remained at ports until payment was confirmed and necessary inspections were conducted. With the new system, once document verification and visual inspections are finalized, samples will be collected for testing immediately, allowing the inspection and testing processes to occur concurrently.

Benefits for Consumers

These changes are expected to positively impact consumers by ensuring that perishable goods, such as fruits, dairy products, and processed foods, spend less time at ports. By reducing the period these items are held up, there is a lower likelihood of spoilage, ultimately helping to maintain product quality.
