First Convocation of AIIMS Rajkot Highlights Role of Technology and Human Empathy in Healthcare

Presidential Address Emphasizes Importance of Empathy

On April 14, 2026, President Droupadi Murmu addressed the first convocation ceremony of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Rajkot. She acknowledged the transformative potential of modern technologies, including artificial intelligence, robotics, and precision medicine, in enhancing diagnostic capabilities for healthcare professionals. However, she underscored that human empathy remains irreplaceable in the medical field.

Addressing the graduates, President Murmu highlighted the significance of their role as they embark on their medical careers during a period of rapid technological advancements. She stated, “By using the latest technologies, not only will you update your knowledge, but also be able to diagnose patients better. But nothing can replace human empathy in healthcare. Your kind words, your smile and your patience in listening to patients is very effective.”

Furthermore, she emphasized that being a good doctor entails more than technical skill; it also demands adherence to ethics and compassion. She articulated that a sensitive healthcare provider could significantly impact society.

Regional Heritage and Challenges in Healthcare

Murmu acknowledged the historical and cultural significance of the Saurashtra region, referencing its rich heritage linked to Mahatma Gandhi and holy sites such as Somnath and Dwarkadhish. She urged those associated with AIIMS Rajkot to embody the principle of karma as demonstrated by Bhagwan Shri Krishna by dedicating their efforts to the service of the community.

She addressed specific healthcare challenges faced in Saurashtra, noting the unique geographical and demographic factors that contribute to complicated health situations, particularly concerning maternal and child health and sickle cell disease. She expressed optimism that AIIMS Rajkot would utilize these challenges as opportunities for advancement in medical care.

The President commended the institution for its contributions to telemedicine, community health, and educational outreach, indicating that such efforts are integral to addressing the region’s healthcare needs.

National Importance of AIIMS and Healthcare Goals

In her address, President Murmu commented on the broader role of AIIMS institutions across the nation. She stated, “It is important that the health of the people is maintained to achieve the aim of Viksit Bharat by 2047.” She recognized the Government of India’s initiatives to enhance healthcare access and quality, emphasizing that collaborative efforts among various stakeholders are essential for success.

Murmu highlighted the pivotal role that prestigious institutions like AIIMS play in setting standards for medical services, innovative research, and as guiding lights for the national healthcare framework.
