Investigations Launched During Ongoing Probe
In a significant development, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) conducted searches at seven locations in Kolkata on Wednesday as part of an ongoing money laundering investigation involving the Merlin group, a real estate developer. During these searches, the ED uncovered links between the company’s promoters and several high-ranking politicians and bureaucrats from West Bengal.
According to sources within the ED, the agency is scrutinizing the role of these public servants and the nature of their financial transactions with the Merlin group and its key players. This investigation is taking place in the lead-up to the polling dates in West Bengal, which are set for April 23 and April 29.
Seizures Made and Evidence Collected
Officials involved in the investigation reported that the ED has seized various “incriminating digital devices and documents” from the premises of the builder. These materials are said to indicate a deep-rooted nexus between the real estate group and state officials as well as politicians.
As the investigation progresses, the ED is focusing on establishing a money trail connected to the Merlin group’s promoters, including Sushil Mohta and Saket Mohta, along with other related entities. The agency is reportedly analyzing documents that appear to have been fabricated to unlawfully acquire numerous pieces of land in Kolkata, which may include public properties.
Allegations of Land Fraud and Commercial Exploitation
The investigation has raised concerns regarding allegations of land fraud. According to a senior official, the accused individuals allegedly exploited these lands commercially by launching extensive real estate projects. They purportedly misrepresented themselves as legal owners based on counterfeit documents, thereby inducing the public to invest significant sums in their ventures.
The ED’s actions form part of a broader effort to uncover financial misconduct linked to real estate dealings in the region, particularly in light of the upcoming elections.
