V Muraleedharan, a senior leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), has officially submitted his nomination papers to contest from the Kazhakkuttom constituency in the upcoming Kerala Assembly elections scheduled for 2026. As a prominent figure within the BJP, Muraleedharan aims to enhance the party’s influence in a state where it seeks to increase its foothold.

The elections in Kerala will be held in a single phase on April 9, with the results expected to be announced on May 4.

Early Life and Education

Born on December 12, 1958, in the Kannur district of Kerala, V Muraleedharan completed his early education at Kodakkalam UP School and later attended St Joseph’s Higher Secondary School in Thalassery. He graduated with a degree in English literature from Government Brennen College, Thalassery.

From a young age, Muraleedharan was actively involved with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student organization affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS).

Political Journey

Muraleedharan’s political journey began during the Emergency period in India, between 1975 and 1977. In the following year, he assumed the role of taluk president of the ABVP in Thalassery. By 1979, he was appointed as the Kannur district secretary of ABVP, and in 1980, he became the state joint secretary.

Over the next eleven years, Muraleedharan collaborated closely with prominent leaders such as KN Govindacharya and Dattatraya Hosabale. In 1994, he relocated to Mumbai, where he served as the All India General Secretary of the ABVP until 1996. He made his return to Kerala in 1997 to engage in a research project with the Khadi and Village Industries Commission in Thiruvananthapuram.

Further Political Roles and Leadership

In 2004, Muraleedharan took on the position of national convener of the BJP NGO cell, followed by his appointment as the All India Convener of the BJP training cell in 2005. He served as the vice president of BJP Kerala from 2006 to 2010, during which time he emphasized the training of party workers and local body members.

In 2009, Muraleedharan ran for the Lok Sabha from Kozhikode but was not successful. January 2010 marked a significant milestone in his career, as he was elected as the president of the Kerala BJP, a position he retained after being re-elected in January 2013.

In May 2019, he was appointed as a Union Minister and soon after became the deputy chief whip in the Rajya Sabha. Muraleedharan held the role of Minister of State for External Affairs and Parliamentary Affairs from 2019 to 2024.
