Rajeev Chandrasekhar Responds to Asset Allegations, Predicts Political Realignment in Kerala

Allegations of Asset Non-Disclosure Dismissed

In a statement issued one day before voting in Kerala, BJP president Rajeev Chandrasekhar responded to allegations from the Congress party regarding his failure to disclose assets in his election affidavit. Chandrasekhar characterized the accusations as a “sad, desperate effort” by a “scared” opposition to distract the public from pressing development issues.

Chandrasekhar emphasized that allegations alone do not constitute truth and questioned the motives behind the Congress party’s actions. “If they have evidence, why are they not going to the police and the election commission? They will not do that,” he asserted, addressing the credibility of the claims made against him.

Predictions of Political Realignment

The former union minister further speculated about a significant political realignment in Kerala’s future electoral landscape. He posited that the upcoming elections would be the last in which the Left Democratic Front (LDF) and the Congress party would contest separately. Chandrasekhar predicted that both parties would officially unite to form the INDIA alliance for future elections.

Chandrasekhar’s comments followed a formal complaint by Congress leader KS Sabarinathan, the United Democratic Front (UDF) candidate for the Nemom assembly seat. Sabarinathan claimed that Chandrasekhar had not adequately disclosed assets valued at Rs 200 crore. He noted that serious discrepancies regarding asset declarations had come to light after nomination filings, leading the UDF to raise the issue with the Election Commission.

“We have formally raised the issue with the EC during scrutiny and will submit detailed evidence,” Sabarinathan announced, emphasizing the urgency and seriousness of the allegations.

Upcoming Election Details

Kerala is set to hold elections in a single phase on April 9, with vote counting scheduled for May 4. The CPM-led Left Democratic Front is aiming to maintain its power against the rival Congress-led United Democratic Front, while the BJP seeks to expand its presence in the state, buoyed by recent successes in the Thiruvananthapuram civic polls.
