Top Woman Maoist Leader Killed In Encounter, Others Warned, “Time Running Out”

Security Forces Strike in Kanker District

In a significant operation against Maoist insurgents in the Bastar region of Chhattisgarh, security forces have killed a prominent commander known as Rupi during an encounter in the dense forests of Kanker district. The operation took place in the Machpalli-Aramjhora-Hidur area within the jurisdiction of the Chhotebethiya-Partapur police station, marking a notable setback for the Maoist network in the vicinity.

A joint team of police and security personnel initiated a combing operation in response to actionable intelligence concerning the presence of armed Maoists. The situation escalated into a violent exchange of gunfire when Maoist cadres opened fire on the advancing forces in the Machpalli area. Once the gunfire ceased, security forces discovered the body of a female Maoist cadre at the scene.

Profile of Rupi and Her Role

Rupi held the rank of Area Committee Member (ACM) within the Maoist hierarchy and was married to Vijay Reddy, a senior leader of the Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee (DKSZC), who had been killed in an encounter in the Manpur-Mohla district back in 2025. Notably, Rupi had remained active in the Maoist movement despite repeated calls from authorities urging her to surrender, placing her among the last surviving Telugu-origin militants in the Bastar region.

Superintendent of Police for Kanker, Nikhil Rakhecha, confirmed the operation was conducted based on reliable intelligence and mentioned that the recovering team seized a pistol, ammunition, and other materials relevant to the operation. “This was a targeted search operation. After the exchange of fire, the body of a female Maoist commander was recovered. Identification confirms she is Rupi, an ACM-rank cadre,” Rakhecha stated.

Intelligence and Ongoing Operations

Officials revealed that Rupi had been under observation by security forces for some time, which included numerous appeals for her to surrender over the past months. However, she opted to remain with the armed group, a choice that ultimately resulted in her death. Inspector General of Police for Bastar Range, Sundarraj Pattilingam, commented on the encounter, viewing it as part of continued efforts to exert pressure on Maoist groups.

Pattilingam highlighted the government’s ongoing offers for Maoist cadres to surrender in hopes of reintegration into society. “Many have chosen that path,” he noted. However, he stressed that those who persist in their violent ways will face dire consequences. He directed a stark warning to the remaining Maoist members, stating, “Very few Maoists are left active in this region now. Time is running out. They must surrender and return to the mainstream for a peaceful and dignified life.”

Current Situation in Kanker Region

Security officials estimate that approximately ten Maoist cadres continue to operate in the Kanker district. Efforts are ongoing, with security forces systematically combing the nearby forests to locate remaining insurgents. The killing of Rupi is perceived as both a symbolic and strategic win for security forces; it represents a connection to larger Maoist leadership and serves to further diminish an already weakened Maoist presence in Bastar.
