Kerala Girl Who Went Missing During Hike In Karnataka Found Dead 4 Days Later

Incident Overview

A 14-year-old girl from Kerala, identified as Sri Nanda, has been found dead after going missing during a family trip to the Chandradrona hill range in Karnataka. Her body was discovered four days after an extensive search effort initiated by the police. The girl’s family had raised concerns about a possible kidnapping.

Sri Nanda, a Class 10 student hailing from Palakkad, was on a trip with approximately 40 relatives. The family visited the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hampi in North Karnataka before arriving in Chikkamagaluru at around 3 PM on April 7. After this, they traveled by private jeeps to a shrine and subsequently went for a hike in the Chandradrona hills.

The girl was seen in a video with a family member earlier on the day of the hike, but around 6 PM, as darkness approached, she went missing. According to her family, she was last seen in the Manikyadhara region of the hills.

Initially, family members searched for her but were unable to find her, prompting them to file a police complaint. In response, law enforcement quickly launched a search operation focused on the steep terrains and inaccessible areas of the hills. Search teams utilized ropes and conducted drone surveillance during night-time operations.

Discovery of the Body

After four days of continuous searching, Sri Nanda’s body was located in a valley nearly 1,500 feet below the Manikyadhara viewpoint. This led to suspicions from her family regarding the circumstances of her disappearance.

Home Minister G Parameshwara stated that various theories were being discussed, including the possibility that the girl was kidnapped or had left with someone. He noted that the truth surrounding the incident would only be revealed once more information was available.

Investigation Efforts

Despite the immediate launch of a search operation equipped with modern technology like thermal cameras and drones, the initial investigation did not yield any significant leads, raising concerns among family and officials alike. Authorities are currently exploring all potential scenarios, including whether Sri Nanda fell from the mountain or if other factors played a role in her death.

In connection with the ongoing investigation, police have seized the mobile phones of the girl’s parents to gather more information. This tragic incident follows another recent case involving a woman from Kerala, GS Sharanya, who was also reported missing during a trek in Karnataka.

On April 2, Sharanya, a 36-year-old IT professional, became separated from her group while attempting to descend from Thadiyandamol, the highest peak in Kodagu, Karnataka. She lost her way and spent four days alone in a dense forest, surviving solely on water, before being rescued.
