Ibrahima Konate Expresses Frustration Over Rejected Penalty in Liverpool’s Loss to PSG
Penalty Decision Highlights Liverpool’s Champions League Exit
Ibrahima Konate has voiced his frustration regarding the decision not to award Liverpool a penalty during their recent Champions League quarter-final match against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG). The incident occurred in the second half of the second leg at Anfield, which concluded with a score of 2-0 in favor of PSG, resulting in a 4-0 aggregate defeat for Liverpool. Konate believes that a penalty could have changed the outcome of the match.
During the game, Liverpool’s Alexis Mac Allister fell under pressure from PSG’s Willian Pacho, prompting a penalty call from referee Maurizio Mariani. However, following a VAR review, the decision was reversed, denying Liverpool the opportunity to capitalize on what Konate considered a clear penalty. He indicated that the momentum shifted significantly following the VAR intervention, and Liverpool struggled to recover thereafter.
Konate’s Remarks on Match Performance
In his post-match comments, Konate emphasized the potential impact a successful penalty could have had on the match’s outcome. “If we got the penalty and score it would be completely different,” he stated, highlighting his disappointment over the officiating decision. He also referenced a previous season’s similar situation against PSG, noting a recurring theme that has contributed to Liverpool’s struggles against the French club.
Although acknowledging PSG’s strength, Konate insisted that Liverpool had played well enough to win the match, citing multiple missed opportunities. “We created many chances and I think we were the better team. It was a little bit unfair,” he remarked, pointing out the contrast between Liverpool’s chances and PSG’s effective scoring from limited opportunities.
Looking Ahead: Premier League Goals
With the Champions League exit now behind them, Konate urged his teammates to refocus on their Premier League campaign. Sitting in fifth place, Liverpool is aiming to secure a top-five finish to qualify for next season’s Champions League. “It is (the) minimum standard for Liverpool to play Champions League. We have six games left and we have to give all in those six games,” he emphasized, recognizing the importance of the remaining matches for the team’s aspirations.
In the context of injuries, it has been reported that striker Hugo Ekitike is likely to be sidelined for some time after sustaining an injury during the first half of the game against PSG. Konate expressed concern for his teammate, stating, “I think it is bad. I don’t know, I have heard many things. I have no word to talk about that because with the World Cup coming it is very, very hard for him and I send him my prayers.”
Liverpool’s attention will shift back to domestic competitions as they work to improve their position in the Premier League and aim for a spot in European competitions next season. The players are expected to give their all in the upcoming fixtures as they seek to turn around a challenging season.
