ECI announces 2,926 candidates for West Bengal Assembly elections

Candidate Overview

The Election Commission of India (ECI) revealed that 2,926 candidates will contest in the forthcoming West Bengal Assembly elections, as reported in an official press release issued on Tuesday. The elections are scheduled to take place in two phases, on April 23 and April 29, with the results to be announced on May 4.

For Phase I, 1,478 candidates are competing across 152 constituencies, while Phase II will see 1,448 candidates contesting for 142 constituencies. This comprehensive candidate list follows the completion of the nomination process, which involved specific deadlines and scrutiny procedures.

Nomination Process

The deadline for filing nominations for Phase II in West Bengal was April 9. Following that, the scrutiny of these nominations was conducted on April 10, allowing candidates until April 13 at 3.00 PM to withdraw their nominations if they so wished. The Election Commission has instructed Returning Officers to publish the final list of candidates in the official gazette and to securely store all election-related documentation, including the nomination papers, in sealed envelopes.

To enhance voter recognition, ballot papers for Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) will display colored photographs of the candidates alongside essential information such as their serial number and party symbol.

Political Landscape

The upcoming elections are expected to feature a significant contest between the incumbent Trinamool Congress (TMC), which is seeking a fourth consecutive term, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which aims to establish its governance in the state following noteworthy performance in previous elections.

On the eve of the announcement, Union Home Minister Amit Shah criticized the TMC government, particularly concerning issues of infiltration, and asserted that a BJP-led government would facilitate the completion of fencing along the Bangladesh border. He made these remarks while addressing rallies in the state, wherein he warned that “goons of TMC” should remain indoors during the election period.

Amit Shah’s statements included a direct confrontation with West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, who he accused of trying to intimidate the majority community. He referenced previous incidents of unrest during TMC rule, questioning the government’s accountability in those crises.
