Vijaya Kishore Rahatkar has assumed office as the new Chairperson of the National Commission for Women (NCW) in New Delhi on October 22, 2024. Her tenure as the 9th Chairperson has commenced immediately, taking over from Rekha Sharma, whose term concluded in August 2024.

Prior to her current role, Rahatkar served as the Chairperson of the Maharashtra State Commission for Women from 2016 to 2021. She also held the position of Mayor of Chatrapati Sambhajinagar from 2007 to 2010, gaining substantial experience in leadership and women’s issues.

Rahatkar holds a bachelor’s degree in Physics and a master’s degree in History from the University of Pune, reflecting a strong academic background that complements her professional experience.
