Priyadarshan on Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar’s Acting Abilities
Views on Acting Roles
Filmmaker Priyadarshan recently expressed his views on the contrasting acting styles of two prominent Bollywood actors, Shah Rukh Khan and Akshay Kumar. In a conversation with India Today, he remarked on how Khan’s immense stardom sometimes limits him in portraying certain roles authentically.
Priyadarshan highlighted that Akshay Kumar’s ability to embody a “common man” is significantly enhanced by his relatable physicality and demeanor. He stated, “The plus point of Akshay is that he can look like a common man. His body language, the way he walks, especially when I did Khatta Meetha, I really thought that he looked like a road contractor who is struggling.”
Shah Rukh Khan’s Urban Persona
According to Priyadarshan, Shah Rukh Khan’s urban background affects his ability to connect with rural characters in films. He recounted an experience while filming Billu Barber, where he took Khan to a remote village. There, Khan remarked, “How did you find this place?” This comment highlighted Khan’s disconnect with rural life, as Priyadarshan noted that Khan himself stated, “I can never relate to a village because I always grew up in Delhi.”
Priyadarshan went on to explain, “Shah Rukh can never act as a villager, because his body language is very polished, very urban.” This distinction indicates the director’s belief that an actor’s background and physicality significantly influence their portrayals on screen.
Humor and Poverty in Priyadarshan’s Work
In discussing the themes prevalent in his films, Priyadarshan remarked, “What I call is humour of life, humour of poverty.” He elaborated that many of his narratives focus on characters dealing with financial hardships. He cited the film Hera Pheri as an example, labeling it a “comedy of poverty” that revolves around characters in desperate situations with no money.
Priyadarshan is currently preparing for the release of his upcoming film Bhooth Bangla, which stars Akshay Kumar in a leading role. The film also features notable actors such as Paresh Rawal, Rajpal Yadav, Tabu, and Wamiqa Gabbi in significant roles. Bhooth Bangla is set to premiere on April 16, 2026.
