Congress Criticizes PM Modi’s Foreign Policy Amid Iran-US Conflict
Accusations Over Israel Visit Timing
The Congress party has levied criticisms against Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding his foreign policy, particularly focusing on the timing of his recent visit to Israel. Jairam Ramesh, a prominent Congress leader, raised concerns that Modi’s visit occurred just days before military action was taken by Israel, in conjunction with the United States, against Iran on February 28. This operation reportedly targeted high-ranking officials within the Iranian regime, including its leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Ramesh expressed disapproval of Modi’s lack of commentary on the situation in Gaza and Israel’s policies in the occupied West Bank during his visit, arguing that this omission diminished India’s standing on the global stage. He utilized social media platform X to highlight the conflict, indicating that the targeted actions against Iran began shortly after Modi’s return from Israel.
Operation Sindoor’s Global Outreach Criticized
Furthermore, Ramesh drew parallels between the current diplomatic climate and the international response to Pakistan following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, which occurred during Manmohan Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister. He emphasized that the Modi government’s efforts to isolate Pakistan diplomatically have not achieved the intended outcome, particularly in light of recent negotiations for a ceasefire.
He characterized Pakistan’s involvement in securing the ceasefire as a significant blow to Modi’s personalized diplomatic approach, which has aimed to position Pakistan as a failed state. Ramesh underscored that despite the Modi administration’s assertions, it has not succeeded in presenting Pakistan as a pariah on the world stage.
Concerns Over Diplomacy and Strategy
In his statements, Ramesh also referenced Operation Sindoor, criticizing the government for failing to maintain momentum in its international narrative regarding Pakistan’s alleged support for terrorism in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K). He remarked that former Prime Minister Singh had effectively garnered international support against Pakistan post the Mumbai attacks, a strategy that seems to be lacking under Modi’s leadership.
Ramesh’s comments questioned the effectiveness of Modi’s diplomatic engagement with foreign leaders, particularly when it comes to managing narratives. He further pointed out the abrupt conclusion of Operation Sindoor on May 10, 2025, highlighting that the announcement of its cessation came from the U.S. Secretary of State, suggesting a lack of control over the situation from the Indian side.
Personal Attacks on PM Modi’s Image
The Congress spokesperson did not shy away from making personal attacks on PM Modi’s global reputation. Ramesh claimed that Modi’s silence on pivotal international issues, including Israel’s military actions and comments made by U.S. officials, only underscores his inadequacies. He described Modi as a “self-styled Vishwaguru” whose bravado has been exposed in the face of international challenges.
Ramesh asserted that there is a significant relief felt globally, juxtaposed with Modi’s supposed cowardice in addressing Israel’s actions and rhetoric from the U.S. administration. His statements reflect a growing discontent within the Congress party regarding the government’s handling of diplomatic relations and international crises.
