Vaibhav Sooryavanshi Set to Make T20I Debut for India in Upcoming Ireland Tour
Prospects of Young Talent
Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, a promising left-handed batsman, is likely to be selected for India’s T20I tour to Ireland scheduled for June. At just 15 years of age, he could potentially become the youngest player to represent India in international cricket. According to sources within the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), Sooryavanshi’s name has been shortlisted among other players for the series, taking place prior to a white-ball tour to England.
Sooryavanshi has showcased remarkable talent in the current IPL season, where he has excelled against renowned bowlers. Notably, he scored a blistering 78 runs off just 26 balls against Royal Challengers Bangalore, followed by a 52 off 17 balls against Chennai Super Kings, and a 39 runs in just 14 balls against Mumbai Indians. His ability to perform under pressure has caught the attention of selectors.
Selection Process
The national selectors are accelerating the process of integrating young talent into the Indian team. Reports suggest that if Sooryavanshi continues his impressive performances, he will be included not only in the Ireland series but also in the later tour of Zimbabwe. The selectors are enthusiastic about providing exposure to upcoming players, and Sooryavanshi stands out as a prime candidate.
A senior functionary from the BCCI has publicly expressed confidence in Sooryavanshi’s abilities. IPL chairman Arun Dhumal praised the young batsman’s skill during the ongoing IPL 2026 season, emphasizing the rarity of such talent at a young age. His assertion underscores the belief that Sooryavanshi deserves to make his debut for Team India as the youngest player in history.
Former India all-rounder Irfan Pathan also voiced support for Sooryavanshi, urging the selectors to fast-track his inclusion in the national team.
Record-Breaking Opportunity
If Sooryavanshi participates in the Ireland T20I series, he would surpass the record set by Shafali Verma, who is currently the youngest cricketer to play for India at the age of 15 years, seven months, and 27 days. Sachin Tendulkar holds the record as the youngest male cricketer, having made his Test debut at the age of 16 in 1989. The two T20 matches against Ireland are scheduled for June 26 and June 28.
Team Composition for Ireland Tour
The selection committee is expected to feature a largely second-string side for the Ireland series, which comes shortly after the IPL concludes. This strategy aims to offer Sooryavanshi and several other noteworthy players a chance to experience international competition.
This tour will be immediately followed by a series in England, comprising five T20Is and three ODIs, starting July 1, where many senior players are anticipated to return to the squad.
Approach to Batting
Commenting on his batting philosophy, Sooryavanshi shared that he focuses on the ball rather than the bowler. “While I am aware of who is bowling, my main focus is on playing the ball and sticking to my game,” he stated. He acknowledges the support and guidance he receives from his father, coaches, and team manager Romi Bhinder, all of whom encourage him to remain patient and dedicated to his development as a player.
