Former Cricketer Critiques Hardik Pandya’s Captaincy After Mumbai Indians’ Loss to RCB

Captaincy Comes Under Fire

Following the defeat of the Mumbai Indians (MI) against the Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, Hardik Pandya’s leadership has drawn sharp criticism from former Indian opener Sadagoppan Ramesh. The match, held at Wankhede Stadium, ended with MI losing by 22 runs, marking their third consecutive defeat in the tournament.

Ramesh specifically pointed out Pandya’s tactical decisions as significant factors contributing to the team’s poor performance. Highlighting the use of star bowler Jasprit Bumrah, Ramesh expressed concern over the timing of his overs. He criticized Pandya for using Bumrah in the power play, arguing that the bowler’s effectiveness was compromised by not having him bowl during critical periods of the innings.

Critical Analysis of Bowling Decisions

In the match, RCB, batting first, scored an impressive 240 runs for four wickets, setting a record for their highest innings total against MI in IPL history. Ramesh condemned Pandya’s decision to utilize spinners Mitchell Santner and Mayank Markande during crucial overs, noting that Santner conceded 24 runs in his first over and Markande went for 40 runs in two overs. Ramesh called it a “cardinal sin” to bowl spinners at both ends in the seventh and eighth overs at Wankhede, a venue known for assisting pace bowlers.

Ramesh also criticized the decision to bowl Markande against RCB batsman Rajat Patidar, who has a strong record against spinners. He questioned the logic behind such a strategic choice. Ramesh’s remarks highlight the dissatisfaction with how the team’s bowling resources were managed during the match.

Pandya’s Leadership Style Questioned

Furthermore, Ramesh characterized Pandya’s performance as that of a captain in a “confused state.” He mentioned that even seasoned players like Rohit Sharma and Suryakumar Yadav seemed perplexed by some of Pandya’s decisions. An instance that exemplified this confusion was Pandya’s choice to review a high full toss bowled to Tim David, which shocked even his teammates.

Despite acknowledging MI’s potential strength as a team, Ramesh stated that Pandya must rectify these notable captaincy errors if they hope to secure a place in the top four and contend for the championship. He emphasized that with the talent in their squad, Pandya should focus on avoiding blatant mistakes rather than needing to excel in captaincy.

Mumbai Indians’ Current Standing

As of now, the Mumbai Indians sit in eighth place in the IPL standings, having accumulated only two points from their first four matches. Their lone victory of the season came in the opening match against the Kolkata Knight Riders. With significant improvements needed, the team aims to turn around its fortunes in the upcoming matches.
