Kohima: Polling for the Koridang Assembly bypoll in Nagaland commenced on Thursday amid heightened security measures following election-related violence that resulted in one death. Six candidates are contesting for the assembly seat, which became vacant after the passing of sitting BJP MLA Imkong L Imchen on November 11 last year.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), part of the ruling People’s Democratic Alliance (PDA), has nominated Daochier I. Imchen, the son of the late MLA. The Indian National Congress has put forward T. Chalukumba Ao for the election. I Abenjang is representing the National People’s Party (NPP), while three Independent candidates are also in the race: Imchatoba Imchen, Imtiwapang, and Toshikaba.

Voting Information

According to election officials, voting began at all 30 polling stations across the constituency starting at 7 am and is set to continue until 4 pm. A total of 22,382 voters, including 11,071 women, are eligible to cast their votes in this bypoll.

Out of the 30 polling stations, authorities have classified 13 as vulnerable and 17 as critical, prompting the deployment of additional security personnel to these locations, along with increased surveillance. Notably, two polling booths are staffed entirely by women.

Security Measures

Authorities expressed that extensive arrangements have been implemented to facilitate a free, fair, and peaceful election process. Security has been significantly escalated in the constituency following violent incidents on April 5 and 6, which resulted in one fatality and damage to several vehicles.

Vote Counting Schedule

The counting of votes for the Koridang Assembly bypoll is scheduled to take place on May 4. This election is crucial for the political landscape of Nagaland as candidates vie for the vacant legislative seat.
