Married At 14, Maharashtra Girl Dies By Suicide. Husband Arrested

Incident Overview

A tragic incident has emerged from Mangalvedha Tehsil in Solapur district, Maharashtra, where a 14-year-old girl took her own life. This occurred just four months after she was compelled to enter into a child marriage with a 19-year-old man. The local police reported that the girl had faced both mental and physical harassment in her new marital environment, leading her to this desperate act.

The case is being addressed by the Mangalvedha Police, who have registered charges against five individuals for allegedly abetting the girl’s suicide. This group includes her husband and father-in-law, both of whom have been arrested as investigations continue.

Details of Police Investigation

According to Dattatray Borigidde, Police Inspector at the Mangalvedha Police Station, the marriage of the girl occurred in the Bavchi and Nimboni areas of the tehsil. He noted that the girl’s young age and the associated burdens of household responsibilities likely contributed to her emotional distress.

“The girl was a minor, and she was forced to perform various household chores,” Inspector Borigidde explained. “Due to her tender age, she was likely unable to bear the pressure of these responsibilities. Furthermore, her husband had physical relations with her and further instigated her distress. The combination of physical and mental harassment ultimately led her to take her own life,” he added.

In light of the seriousness of the situation, the police have taken decisive action. A formal case has been registered against five individuals linked to the incident. The husband and father-in-law are currently in police custody following their arrest.

Inspector Borigidde emphasized the ongoing nature of the investigation, stating, “Our team is conducting further inquiries into the circumstances surrounding this case to ensure justice is served.” The tragic event underscores the persistent issue of child marriages and the dangers faced by young girls in similar circumstances.
