Kerala Teen Missing During Family Hike in Karnataka

Search Operation Underway

A 14-year-old girl from Kerala has been reported missing while on a family excursion to the Chandradrona hill range in Karnataka. The incident occurred on April 7, with police conducting search operations for over 24 hours. Sri Nanda, a Class 10 student, was hiking with approximately 40 family members when she went missing around 5:30 PM as darkness began to fall.

The family initially attempted to locate her but were unsuccessful. Consequently, a formal complaint was filed on April 8 by Shashikumar K G, a relative of the missing girl and a resident of Kadampazhippuram village in Palakkad district, Kerala. Following this, local authorities launched a search operation focused on the challenging topography of the area.

Search Efforts and Assistance

Police have utilized a variety of methods in their search efforts, including employing ropes to navigate difficult terrain and utilizing drone surveillance for night operations. A police officer from Kerala is also collaborating with the local law enforcement in the investigation. While surveillance footage has confirmed that the girl was seen with a family member earlier in the day, she has yet to be located.

Recent Comparable Incident

This disappearance follows a recent case involving a tech professional from Kerala, GS Sharanya, who went missing for four days during a trek in Karnataka. On April 2, the 36-year-old set out to climb Thadiyandamol, the highest peak in the Kodagu district. She became separated from her group while descending and lost her way in a dense forest. During her four-day ordeal, she survived solely on water until her rescue.

In an interview, Sharanya recounted how she began her trek with a group of 12 individuals and reached the peak by 10:40 AM. She explained that while descending, she moved ahead with two fellow trekkers but eventually separated from the group. After waiting at a rock for them to return, she realized they were no longer in sight and attempted to locate another group without success.

Sharanya noted that attempts to message a friend for assistance were thwarted when her phone died. In her situation, she had not taken food, believing the trek would be easy, and managed to survive on about three liters of water daily during her time lost in the wilderness.

Concerns and Government Response

The rural unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Kodagu has expressed concerns about Sharanya’s case, claiming that there are suspicions surrounding her disappearance and alleging that she may have staged the incident, potentially resulting in economic losses for the government.

In light of these two recent incidents, the Karnataka government has announced plans to implement a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for trekking activities across the state. Officials are considering the creation of an e-tracking system for trekkers, which would function similarly to existing applications used in tiger reserves. This temporary tracking app would be installed on trekkers’ mobile devices, enabling authorities to quickly locate individuals who may go missing during hikes.

Furthermore, the government is contemplating the requirement for certified nature guides to have wireless communication systems, assigning accountability to trek leaders, and establishing group insurance coverage for trekkers to enhance safety measures during outdoor activities.
