This resignation occurs amid ongoing controversies involving cash recovery and a potential impeachment process. In his letter dated April 9, Justice Varma expressed a desire not to burden the President with the details of his decision.
“While I do not propose to burden your august office with the reasons which have constrained me to submit this missive, it is with deep anguish that I hereby tender my resignation from the office of Judge of the Hon’ble High Court of Judicature at Allahabad, with immediate effect. It has been an honour to serve in this office,” Justice Varma wrote.
Background and Controversy
Justice Varma previously served as a judge on the Delhi High Court before being transferred to the Allahabad High Court amid a controversy involving alleged recovery of unaccounted cash at his residence. He was sworn in at the Allahabad High Court on April 5 of the previous year.
After this incident, he became the subject of a Supreme Court-led in-house inquiry, which subsequently recommended further actions regarding the allegations against him.
His resignation coincides with both an internal inquiry into the allegations as well as the possibility of impeachment proceedings within Parliament. The Lok Sabha Speaker has accepted a motion supported by 146 Members of Parliament and constituted a three-member committee to investigate the allegations surrounding Justice Varma.

The controversy arose following an incident on March 14, when a fire broke out in a storeroom at Justice Varma’s official residence. Fire responders discovered a significant amount of cash while addressing the fire, although Justice Varma was not at the residence during the incident.
The findings from the Supreme Court’s internal inquiry prompted the initiation of impeachment proceedings in the Parliament. A parliamentary committee has been conducting hearings and reviewing documents related to the allegations against Justice Varma.
