S Jaishankar Speaks To Kuwait, Singapore Counterparts Amid Middle East Crisis

Engagements with Kuwait and Singapore

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar held discussions with his counterparts from Kuwait and Singapore on Monday, centering on the ongoing crisis in West Asia. The conversations come in the wake of a new U.S. blockade targeting Iranian ports.

During his conversation with Kuwaiti Foreign Minister Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, Jaishankar also addressed the welfare of the Indian community residing in Kuwait. He described the interaction as a productive exchange that touched upon regional dynamics and the concerns of expatriates.

Jaishankar expressed his appreciation for the dialogue via social media, noting, “A good conversation with FM Sheikh Jarrah Jaber Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah of Kuwait. It focused on the regional situation and the well-being of the Indian community,” further emphasizing the importance of such engagements for fostering relations with Gulf nations.

Discussion on West Asia Conflict

In a separate conversation, S. Jaishankar communicated with Singapore’s Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan. The discussion addressed the implications of the West Asia conflict, reflecting on its broader regional impact.

Jaishankar remarked positively on his interaction with Balakrishnan, stating, “Always nice to speak to FM @VivianBala of Singapore. Our discussions were about the conflict in West Asia and its implications,” highlighting a collaborative approach to addressing regional issues with international partners.

U.S. Military Blockade Announcement

The backdrop for these diplomatic conversations is the recent announcement by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding a military blockade aimed at preventing ships from entering or leaving the strategic Strait of Hormuz. This blockade is set to impact all traffic to Iranian ports starting at 10 a.m. ET on Monday, which corresponds to 7:30 p.m. Indian time.

The Strait of Hormuz is a vital maritime passageway, accounting for approximately 20% of global oil and liquefied natural gas (LNG) transportation. The enforcement of the blockade is anticipated to have significant repercussions for regional and global trade.

The discussions initiated by Jaishankar underline India’s proactive engagement in regional diplomacy amid escalating tensions in West Asia. As the situation evolves, India seeks to balance its foreign relations with both Gulf countries and Southeast Asian nations like Singapore.

This series of engagements illustrates India’s commitment to understanding and responding to the complexities within the evolving geopolitical landscape of West Asia, focusing on the safety and welfare of its citizens abroad amidst international military maneuvers.
