Israeli Ambassador Questions Pakistan’s Role as Mediator in Global Affairs
Israeli Perspective on Pakistan’s Credibility
Reuven Azar, Israel’s Ambassador to India, expressed skepticism regarding Pakistan’s reliability as a mediator in international negotiations, particularly in the context of interactions between Iran and the United States. He characterized Pakistan as not being a credible player despite its involvement in mediation efforts. Azar noted that the United States may be leveraging Pakistan’s facilitation capabilities for its own strategic reasons.
In an interview with ANI, Azar stated, “We don’t see Pakistan as a credible player. I think that the United States has decided to use the services of the facilitation of Pakistan for their own reasons.” He further alluded to past scenarios where the U.S. engaged with states like Qatar and Turkey to negotiate agreements beneficial to its interests.
Views on Conflict Resolution in Lebanon and Gaza
When questioned about the possibility of extending a ceasefire framework to cover conflicts in Lebanon and Gaza, Azar clarified that these issues are treated separately. He emphasized the existing framework for Gaza, which includes stipulations for the disarmament of Hamas. “Hamas has to disarm…it has nothing to do with the operation in Iran,” he remarked.
Concerning the situation in Lebanon, Azar explained that the priority is to dismantle the Hezbollah infrastructure in southern Lebanon, which he described as the responsibility of the Lebanese government. His comments come amidst ongoing Israeli military actions in Lebanese cities.
Iran Negotiations and Regional Security
Azar also discussed the importance of the negotiations focused on Iran, indicating that these discussions aim to address various security concerns in the region. He mentioned the implementation of a 15-point plan that includes provisions to prevent Iran from acquiring military nuclear capabilities, restricting its ballistic missile program, and halting the proliferation of terrorism.
His remarks reflect Israel’s broader strategy in securing regional stability while navigating complex geopolitical dynamics involving Iran, Hezbollah, and Hamas.
