Pratibha Devisingh Patil, India’s first woman President, has expressed her support for the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam in a recent letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Women’s Reservation Bill, officially known as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, was approved by Parliament in 2023. This legislation ensures that one-third of the seats in legislative bodies are reserved for women. Amendments to the proposed law aim to expedite its implementation prior to the 2029 general elections, connecting its execution to the 2011 Census instead of the upcoming 2027 Census.

In her correspondence, Patil, who served as the 12th President of India from 2007 to 2012 and is a veteran leader of the Congress party, described the amendment as a transformative reform for the country.
