Families Await News After Explosion at Vedanta Plant

Bhopal: The scene outside the Vedanta Limited thermal power plant in Singhitarai, Sakti, Chhattisgarh, is marked by an atmosphere of tension and confusion almost 17 hours after a boiler tube explosion occurred. As families gather, the urgent question remains for many: who among their loved ones is unaccounted for?

Among the desperate crowd, two young men circulate, repeatedly asking if there is a list of survivors. One of them, Ravindra Ram, is searching for his brother Ramu, who was stationed at the blowout site. Ravindra expresses his confusion and distress, having received conflicting information about his brother’s fate. Rumors suggest that Ramu may be dead or injured but no formal confirmation has been provided.

Ravindra recounts, “We traveled from Kachranwa village in Sonbhadra. I had just left for home the day before. Upon reaching Raigarh station, I learned about the explosion and returned immediately. Since then, I have been trying to find information, but no one is giving us clear answers.”

Details of the Explosion

The explosion took place at approximately 2:35 pm on April 14, causing considerable destruction within the plant. The blast trapped workers, injuring many and scattering debris across the facility. Rescue efforts extended late into the night and continued into the following morning.

Sakti Superintendent of Police Prafulla Thakur has reported that 34 individuals were rescued; unfortunately, 16 of those were confirmed dead, while 20 others sustained injuries, some of them critically. Teams from the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) and ambulances were deployed immediately, with police vehicles entering the site in rapid succession to assist with the emergency efforts.

Families Left in Limbo

Despite these rescue efforts, clarity about the incident has remained elusive. No official list of victims has been released by either the administration or the management of the plant, leaving families—many of whom are migrant workers from Uttar Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, and neighboring states—searching anxiously through hospital corridors and temporary camps for news of their loved ones.

Ravindra is not alone in his anxiety; others around him hold photographs or frantically dial phone numbers that go unanswered. Each moment that passes only amplifies their fear and uncertainty.

Concerns Raised by Workers

The tragedy is compounded by emerging accounts from workers, including Ravindra, who noted that just days before the incident, safety concerns had been raised. “There was a lot of dust coming out of the boiler,” he recalled. “We informed the supervisor, but he dismissed our concerns as normal for the workplace.” Those words now resonate with a heavy weight following the explosion.

Inside the plant, operations have ceased, and a notable shift is occurring outside. Some workers, like Dilip from Shahdol in Madhya Pradesh, have decided to leave the premises. “What is the point of staying?” he questions. “Such a significant accident has occurred. We are frightened. What if it happens again?” For many, the instinct for survival has overtaken the lure of employment.
