Yusuf Pathan’s Relatives Detained in Assault Case, Family Claims Conspiracy
Arrests Linked to Alleged Assault Incident
Three relatives of Yusuf Pathan, a former Indian cricketer and current Trinamool Congress MP, were apprehended following an alleged assault on a 31-year-old man in Byculla. The arrests occurred just a day after the incident, prompting Pathan’s mother-in-law to assert that the situation is an orchestrated attempt to damage his reputation in light of the upcoming Assembly elections in West Bengal.
Naseebjaan Mohd Khaliq, Pathan’s mother-in-law, stated to news agency ANI, “A scuffle broke out between the children, during which our children sustained injuries, and they were hurt as well. They have baselessly defamed my son-in-law. We have never used his name to take action or threaten anyone.” She further emphasized that the allegations seemed to be part of a deliberate effort to tarnish Yusuf Pathan’s name amid the election cycle, maintaining that he had no involvement in the matter.
Details of the Incident
According to reports, the altercation occurred when a local resident named Yusuf Khan engaged in an argument with Pathan’s relatives after allegedly splashing water on one of them while driving. The confrontation escalated when Shoaib, a relative of Pathan, was splashed with water. Despite Khan’s apology, tensions rose, leading to physical aggression from Shoaib against Khan.
In response to the escalating situation, Yusuf Khan reportedly proceeded towards the police station with the intent to file a complaint. However, on their way, Pathan’s relatives allegedly confronted Khan, resulting in a violent altercation where they purportedly attacked Khan and his family with bamboo sticks and baseball bats. Reports indicate that Khan’s brother-in-law sustained a fracture during the incident, along with injuries suffered by Khan’s uncle.
Legal Proceedings and Charges
Pathan’s relatives, identified as his father-in-law, brother-in-law, and another family member, faced serious legal repercussions following the incident. They were charged with assault and causing grievous bodily harm. Following their arrest, they were presented in court and subsequently placed in judicial custody until May 2. A senior officer from the Byculla police confirmed that one more individual implicated in the incident remains at large.
As the legal process unfolds, the incident has garnered attention given the timing of the electoral campaign in the region. Khaliq has sought justice, questioning why attempts are being made to tarnish Pathan’s reputation amidst the election atmosphere, firmly denying any wrongdoing by her son-in-law.
