PM Internship Scheme 2026: Monthly Stipend and Details on Eligibility and Duration
Overview of the PM Internship Scheme
The Prime Minister Internship Scheme (PMIS), launched by the Government of India through the Ministry of Corporate Affairs, offers young individuals an opportunity for industry exposure. The scheme was announced in the Union Budget for 2024-25 and aims to bridge the gap between education and employability by facilitating structured internships in top companies across various sectors.
The PMIS is specifically designed for youth who are not currently engaged in full-time education or employment, enabling them to acquire practical experience in real-world work environments.
Eligibility Criteria
According to the guidelines outlined on the official PMIS portal, applicants must be Indian citizens who have completed at least Class 10, Class 12, an ITI course, a diploma, or a graduation degree. The scheme is targeted toward young individuals within specified age brackets that vary with each phase of the initiative.
Individuals enrolled in full-time academic programs or employed in full-time jobs are deemed ineligible. However, those pursuing online or distance learning programs qualify to apply.
Internship Duration
The PM Internship Scheme provides internships for a duration of up to 12 months. A requirement is that at least 50% of this period be spent at an actual workplace, ensuring participants receive genuine industry exposure instead of just classroom-based training.
Sectors and Stipend Details
Internships are offered across a variety of sectors, including manufacturing, finance, hospitality, and energy. Leading companies from these industries actively participate in the scheme.
Selected candidates for the PMIS will receive a monthly stipend of Rs 5,000. According to government regulations, Rs 4,500 of this stipend is provided through Direct Benefit Transfer by the Government of India, while the participating companies contribute Rs 500.
Moreover, interns are entitled to a one-time grant of Rs 6,000 upon joining. The scheme also includes insurance coverage under various government programs, providing financial protection during the internship period.
Application Process
Interested candidates can apply online via the official PMIS portal. The application process requires registration, completion of personal profiles, and submission of educational details.
The selection process utilizes a technology-based matching system to pair applicants with suitable internship opportunities. Candidates are allowed to apply for multiple roles, increasing their chances of selection.
Aim of the PM Internship Scheme
The PM Internship Scheme is part of a broader initiative by the government to enhance youth employability. By offering financial assistance alongside real-world experience, the program seeks to adequately prepare candidates for the job market and foster a skilled workforce. The government intends to expand internship opportunities significantly in the coming years, positioning PMIS as one of the most ambitious employability programs in the country.
