TCS Nashik Employee Allegations of Harassment and Forced Religious Conversion
Details of Allegations
A male employee of Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) at the Nashik branch has made serious allegations of harassment, including a personal remark suggesting he should “send his wife” to one of the accused if he wanted children. This comment was reportedly made due to the employee’s difficulties with conception despite medical intervention.
The employee indicated that ignoring such remarks led to false reports being sent to the head office, whereby he felt pressured in multiple ways. He alleged that there were attempts at religious conversion within the workplace, which he opposed, leading to further harassment against him and others.
Specific Incidents of Harassment
According to the employee, his team leader, Tausif Akhtar, alongside colleague Danish Sheikh, made unsolicited comments about his personal life and suggested he send his wife for assistance. He also described an incident where Akhtar allegedly threw an object at him and issued a death threat during a confrontation. The employee subsequently reported this incident to the HR department.
Allegations of harassment began shortly after he joined the company in 2022, involving coercion to adopt religious practices against his will. He claimed to have been pressured into wearing a skullcap, reciting religious texts, and performing prayers with the expectation of compliance.
The employee mentioned that Akhtar, using his authority, assigned excessive workloads to him, which included tasks that belonged to other employees, aiming to create a culture of compliance through stress.
Additional Complaints of Inappropriate Behavior
Another colleague reported that a female worker reached out to him in distress after experiencing inappropriate behavior from Akhtar and Sheikh. She stated that certain male staff behaved improperly with women and would sometimes compel them to remain in the office after hours under pretexts related to work.
Furthermore, another female employee alleged that a male colleague, Danish Sheikh, attempted to forcibly kiss her and pressured her into a marriage proposal. Beyond this, there were accusations that Sheikh and his associates made derogatory remarks about Hindu deities and sought to influence her religious beliefs.
Concerns Raised by Female Employees
In a separate report, an employee at the TCS Nashik office claimed she was isolated and made to work alone on a rooftop terrace where access to her phone and personal belongings was restricted. She suggested that younger women, particularly those between 20 and 25 years old, were viewed as “soft targets” by certain employees.
She described a culture in which women who voiced complaints felt intimidated, asserting that the HR personnel in her office appeared apprehensive about intervening in such matters.
Investigations and Government Response
The police have reported that a Special Investigation Team (SIT) is looking into these allegations, focusing on potential collusion among accused employees. Reports indicate that complaints made by victims were not properly escalated within the company, and HR manager Nida Khan has been accused of attempting to minimize the issues raised and providing protection to the perpetrators.
During the ongoing investigation, authorities have collected about 78 suspicious records, including calls and emails exchanged among those accused, and are scrutinizing financial transactions related to the matter.
As of the latest updates, nine cases have been formally registered, with multiple individuals, including Danish Sheikh, in custody. Tata Sons Chairman N Chandrasekaran has mandated an internal investigation, emphasizing the company’s commitment to handling the allegations seriously and stating a zero-tolerance policy towards any form of coercion or misconduct.
Maharashtra Government Initiatives
In light of these incidents, the Maharashtra government is contemplating the introduction of a helpline to assist individuals affected by workplace harassment, similar to the circumstances surrounding the TCS Nashik case. Cabinet Minister Nitesh Rane has indicated that the government is receiving reports from various groups regarding exploitation faced by employees across different companies.
Rane stated that the proposed helpline would provide support to victims or witnesses of workplace harassment, aiming to ensure a prompt response to such issues.
