Russia Conducts Significant Drone Assault on Ukraine, Resulting in 18 Fatalities
Details of the Attack
Russia has executed one of its largest aerial assaults on Ukraine this year, reportedly resulting in the deaths of at least 18 individuals and injuring more than 100 others across multiple cities, according to Ukrainian authorities.
In a statement, Ukraine’s air force indicated that Russia launched 659 drones and 44 missiles over a 24-hour timeframe, targeting major urban areas including Kyiv, Kharkiv, Odesa, Dnipro, and Zaporizhzhia. Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha described the incident as a “massive attack,” noting that the strikes primarily affected civilian populations.
Casualties and Damages Reported
The casualties varied by city. In Kyiv, four individuals, including a 12-year-old boy, were killed following the destruction of a building. The State Emergency Service reported approximately 48 injuries in the capital.
In a nearby construction zone, a strike occurred close to a residential project, resulting in injuries to six workers, two of whom were considered to be in serious condition.
Odesa experienced the most severe impact, with local authorities confirming that eight individuals lost their lives when a residential building was struck first by a drone and subsequently by a missile. Emergency responders were captured in footage carrying victims from the devastated site.
Furthermore, in Dnipro, three individuals were killed, and at least 34 others sustained injuries. Zaporizhzhia reported one death as well.
Response from Ukrainian Authorities
Ukrainian officials have publicly condemned the attacks, highlighting the urgency for accountability. In a statement, Foreign Minister Sybiha asserted, “Such attacks cannot be normalized. These are war crimes that must be stopped.”
President Volodymyr Zelenskyy characterized the strikes as indicative of Russia’s ongoing military campaign, asserting that they undermine calls for the easing of global sanctions. “Another night has proven that Russia does not deserve any easing of global policy or lifting of sanctions,” he remarked.
The current wave of assaults came shortly after Russian President Vladimir Putin had announced a temporary ceasefire during the Orthodox Easter period, raising concerns over the sincerity of such measures.
Ongoing Emergency Response Efforts
Ukrainian emergency services remain actively engaged in rescue operations in the impacted regions, with damage assessments being conducted concurrently. Officials have remarked on the urgency of the situation as responders continue to ensure the safety of residents in affected buildings.
At the Odesa National Music Academy, an administrative leader reported significant damage to a dormitory, where five students were injured and subsequently received medical attention. Efforts to evacuate students were reported as officials responded to the crisis.
