Remembering Asha Bhosle: Artists Reflect on Cherished Memories

A Personal Encounter with Asha Bhosle

On August 21, 2019, renowned singer Asha Bhosle shared a photo with Pune-based vocalist Rahul Deshpande, expressing her joy in reconnecting with him. Following the announcement of her passing on April 12, Deshpande reflected on that moment, stating, “She asked me, ‘Can we click a photo?’ I had goosebumps then. Today, I have tears… I didn’t know that moment would become the most priceless thing I own. Standing beside Asha ji, beside a voice that wasn’t just music, it was emotion itself, it was everything. The world lost a legend today. But I lost something more personal — the warmth of a moment I’ll now hold forever.”

Memories of Dance and Performance

Another artist filled with memories was Kathak dancer Pt Nandkishore Kapote, who shared that his mentor, Pt. Birju Maharaj, facilitated his several encounters with Bhosle. He recounted a particular instance during a Kathak workshop where Bhosle arrived unexpectedly. “I vividly recall that Ashatai was so captivated by it that she began dancing alongside Maharaj-ji herself,” he mentioned. He noted that Bhosle mirrored Maharaj’s movements, showcasing her admiration and appreciation for the art form.

A Challenging Journey

Veteran writer Sulabha Teranikar reminisced about her interview with Bhosle in 1993, revealing challenges faced earlier in her life. Losing her father at just 9 years old, Bhosle initially hesitated to enter the music industry. However, after marrying Ganpatrao Bhosle at 14 and moving to Mumbai, she confronted significant struggles. Teranikar stated, “She was under financial constraints, and her husband encouraged her to sing due to her beautiful voice. She recorded her first song at 15, shortly after giving birth to her first child.”

Overcoming adversity, Bhosle gradually established her presence in the music industry while balancing family responsibilities. Teranikar added, “Though she was always busy, she managed to take out time for her children and maintained a beautiful home, balancing both work and personal life.”

A Warm and Simple Presence

Those who were close to Bhosle often spoke about not just her artistry but also her warmth and simplicity. Kishor Sarpotdar, the owner of Poona Guest House, described Bhosle as an aunt-like figure in his life. He remarked on her culinary interest and her fondness for specific dishes from their establishment, highlighting the bond formed between the Sarpotdar and Mangeshkar families over generations.

Shounak Abhisheki, a classical vocalist and Bhosle’s nephew, shared his experience learning from her. “As my paternal aunt, she visited our home frequently, and I feel blessed to have learned so much under her guidance. She respected everyone equally,” he noted. He emphasized her dedication to music, stating that she practiced diligently even up to the age of 90.

Legacy and Remembrance

Sudhir Gadgil, a renowned anchor, spoke of his long-standing rapport with Bhosle, having interviewed her numerous times. He mentioned her candid and humorous demeanor, recalling how she would engage playfully during conversations, especially when discussing her songs. “She was humorous – whenever I brought up discussion about the song ‘Ka re durava,’ she would quietly say on stage, ‘Why so far, come closer,’” he reflected.

In Pune, the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII) expressed a sense of loss felt by the community dedicated to music and film. The institution recognized Bhosle’s “timeless genius and vibrant legacy,” noting, “Her musical journey is one of enriching depth, a saga of immeasurable contribution.”
