Glass At Under-Construction Foot Glass Bridge In Rishikesh Damaged
Incident Report
On Friday, officials reported that the glass at one end of the Bajrang Setu, the first foot glass bridge under construction over the Ganga river in the Laxman Jhula area of Uttarakhand, was damaged by unidentified individuals. This incident raises concerns regarding the security measures in place around the ongoing project.
Praveen Karnawal, the Executive Engineer of the Narendranagar Construction Division of the Public Works Department, stated that in response to this vandalism, the authorities are installing CCTV cameras and enhancing lighting around the bridge. These measures aim to deter similar incidents from occurring in the future.
The bridge features pedestrian walkways on either side, constructed with five layers of toughened glass. Each layer measures 12 millimeters in thickness, totaling to 60 millimeters. While the top layer of glass was damaged, the remaining four layers were reported to be intact.
Project Details
Construction on the Bajrang Setu bridge commenced in 2022, and this incident marks the second occurrence of glass damage this year. Previously, on January 3, a hammer accidentally dropped by a worker also led to damage requiring repairs.
The overall project is being completed at an estimated cost of Rs 69.20 crore. The bridge spans 132.30 meters in length and measures 8.60 meters in width, with dedicated footpaths that are 1.80 meters wide on both sides for pedestrian use.
This project aims to enhance tourism and provide a modern infrastructure option for visitors to the popular destination.
