PM Modi Announces Six Guarantees for West Bengal
Political Shift in West Bengal
Prime Minister Narendra Modi presented a set of six guarantees for West Bengal during a public rally in Haldia on Thursday. He pledged that if the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is elected, it would take decisive action against illegal infiltration, implement the 7th Pay Commission, and ensure accountability for any members associated with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) involved in corruption. Modi expressed optimism about a potential political shift in the state, stating, “Bengal has decided to overcome every adverse situation this time. Change is going to happen across the whole of Bengal.”
During the rally, PM Modi criticized the current TMC government, claiming it has led to increased corruption and criminal activities in the state. He stated that illegal practices, including cattle smuggling, have been allowed to thrive under TMC’s governance. Modi emphasized that the “exit of this ruthless government is certain.”
Details of the Guarantees
Outlining his guarantees, PM Modi highlighted the BJP’s commitment to restoring faith in the rule of law and ensuring accountability in governance. He articulated several key promises, including:
1. A BJP government would replace the current atmosphere of fear with trust, and hold public officials accountable to the citizens they serve.
2. All investigation files related to scams, acts of corruption, and injustices against victims would be reopened for review.
3. Anyone involved in corruption during the TMC regime, regardless of their position, would be subject to legal consequences. “Be it a minister or a watchman, the law will hold everyone to account,” he asserted.
4. Refugees would be granted rights and privileges under the Constitution, while infiltrators would be expelled from India.
5. The implementation of the 7th Pay Commission would be prioritized immediately upon the establishment of a BJP government.
Call for a ‘Double-Engine Government’
PM Modi emphasized the importance of collaboration between the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister for the benefit of West Bengal. He stated that a “double-engine government” would be essential to bolster the state’s development. “Bengal’s best interest does not lie in animosity towards the Prime Minister; rather, the people stand to gain the most if both the Prime Minister and the Chief Minister work together,” he noted.
He also remarked that a double-engine government would contribute to making Bengal self-reliant, particularly in the fisheries and seafood sectors.
Support for the Fisheries Sector
PM Modi highlighted the central government’s initiatives aimed at enhancing the fisheries sector across the nation, including the establishment of a separate Ministry of Fisheries — a milestone since India gained independence. He stated, “Our government, for the very first time, created a distinct Ministry of Fisheries to address the needs of fishermen, their families, and the Blue Economy as a whole.”
The Prime Minister further detailed the BJP’s record budget for fishermen’s welfare, access to Kisan Credit Card (KCC) facilities, and insurance coverage up to ₹5 lakh available for fishermen. He remarked that these benefits have already been availed by numerous individuals.
Modi criticized TMC leaders for their resistance to central schemes, attributing their opposition to political factors. “This increase in fish production has been significantly supported by the PM Matsya Sampada Yojana; however, they have a problem with it because it carries the ‘PM’ tag,” he stated.
Upcoming Assembly Elections
The West Bengal Assembly elections for the 294-member constituency will take place in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with the counting scheduled for May 4. The rally was significant for the BJP as it seeks to strengthen its political presence in West Bengal, a key battleground against the ruling TMC.
