Justice Yashwant Varma Resigns Amid Impeachment Process

Resignation Submitted to the President

Justice Yashwant Varma has officially resigned from his position as a judge at the Allahabad High Court. His resignation comes in the wake of an impeachment process that was initiated following the discovery of a substantial amount of cash at his residence in Delhi last year. The resignation letter has been directed to President Droupadi Murmu.

In his resignation letter, Justice Varma expressed regret over the situation, stating, “While I do not propose to burden your august office with the reasons which have constrained me to submit this missive, it is with deep anguish that I hereby tender my resignation from the office of Judge of Hon’ble High Court of Judicature at Allahabad, with immediate effect.”

Impeachment Process Conclusion

Sources from the Lok Sabha Secretariat noted that Justice Varma’s resignation would effectively bring a halt to the impeachment proceedings against him.

The impeachment process had been initiated in connection with the recovery of a significant amount of cash from Justice Varma’s official residence located in Lutyens Delhi on March 14, 2025. At that time, he was functioning as a judge at the Delhi High Court. The cash allegedly found was reportedly located in a storeroom near the quarters for staff. At the moment of the discovery, Justice Varma and his wife were in Bhopal.

Judicial Inquiry and Subsequent Actions

A week after the cash was discovered, the Supreme Court had established a three-judge committee to conduct an in-house inquiry into the circumstances surrounding the incident. On May 4, a panel of three senior judges provided their report to then Chief Justice Sanjiv Khanna.

Following the submission of the report, the Supreme Court took action by removing Justice Varma from any judicial responsibilities at the Delhi High Court. Subsequently, he was transferred back to his parent institution, the Allahabad High Court, with directives to the Chief Justice there to refrain from assigning him any judicial duties.

Details of the Cash Discovery

In an uncommon move, the Supreme Court released photographs and videos showing the cash allegedly recovered from Justice Varma’s home. Despite the circumstances, Justice Varma has consistently denied any wrongdoing, asserting that neither he nor his family members ever stored cash within the mentioned storeroom. He maintained that the room was accessible to many individuals.
