Mammootty Discusses Role as Antagonist in Kalamkaval
Actor’s Reflection on Production Choices
Mammootty is preparing for the release of his upcoming film, Patriot, which is scheduled for May 1, 2026. In a recent interview, he shared insights into his decision to portray the antagonist in Kalamkaval, a film he also produced under his production company, Mammootty Kampany.
During his conversation with The Hollywood Reporter India, Mammootty explained his motivation behind assuming a villainous role in the film. He stated, “I actually started my production company to make the films that I want to make, films that others are not ready to produce. I don’t think any of my other producers would have agreed to make this film with me in such a role.”
He elaborated on the necessity for variety in acting, saying, “In the end, I am an actor, and of course, I depend on support to become a good actor, a better actor… to deliver better performances. You cannot repeat the same performance 100 times; it has to be different.” He further added, “We have 1.5 billion characters in our country. Out of that, around 3.5 crore are in Kerala itself. Even if I leave out women, there are so many male characters around me and so much for me to do. I want to do it all, that’s how greedy I am.”

Kalamkaval is set against the backdrop of a routine inquiry conducted by the Kerala Police in the serene village of Kottayikonam. Mammootty plays the central antagonist in this film, while Vinayakan stars as the protagonist. The cast also includes several other notable actors such as Gibin Gopinath, Gayatri Arun, Rajisha Vijayan, Shruti Ramachandran, and Azees Nedumangad in significant roles.
Mammootty’s Upcoming Project
In addition to his role in Kalamkaval, Mammootty’s next film, Patriot, features him in a leading role in a spy action drama directed by Mahesh Narayanan. The film’s plot centers around a man who becomes a target of powerful entities after he exposes an intelligence application that compromises the privacy of everyday citizens. The story follows his struggle, alongside a few allies, to navigate the treacherous circumstances.
Mammootty will be joined in this film by Mohanlal in a pivotal role, along with a talented ensemble cast featuring Fahadh Faasil, Nayanthara, Kunchacko Boban, Rajiv Menon, Revathy, and Darshana Rajendran. Initially slated for release on April 23, 2026, the film’s premiere has been rescheduled to May 1, 2026.
