Congress Chief Mallikarjun Kharge Regrets Controversial Remarks Made in Gujarat
Clarification and Apology
Mallikarjun Kharge, the President of the Indian National Congress, expressed his regret over remarks he made during a recent poll rally in Kerala that were controversial. Initially, Kharge defended his statements, claiming they were “deliberately misinterpreted.” However, he later conveyed his “sincere regret” regarding the comments that sparked significant backlash.
Kharge took to X (formerly known as Twitter) to address the issue, stating, “Some remarks of mine in a recent election speech in Kerala are being deliberately misinterpreted. Even so, I express my sincere regret.” He emphasized that it was never his intention to offend the sentiments of the people of Gujarat, a state he respects greatly.
Context of the Remarks
The comments that led to the uproar were made during a poll campaign in the Idukki district of Kerala. In his speech, Kharge aimed to compare the populations of Kerala and Gujarat while criticizing Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan. He remarked that the two leaders could “fool people who are illiterate in Gujarat or in other places” but not in Kerala, which he described as an educated and clever populace.
These remarks triggered sharp criticism from Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders in Gujarat, who deemed them disrespectful to the state’s inhabitants. Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel labeled the comments as “extremely objectionable and unfortunate,” asserting that they insulted millions of Gujaratis and undermined the dignity of the state.
BJP’s Response
In reaction to Kharge’s statements, BJP national spokesperson Pradeep Bhandari criticized the Congress party, suggesting that it engages in a “divide and rule” strategy. Bhandari, through a post on X, remarked that the Congress party, which was established by AO Hume, continues to practice divisive politics, aiming to “pit one Indian against another.” This reflects the ongoing political tension between the Congress and BJP, particularly in the context of electoral campaigns.
The controversy has garnered attention as it highlights the sensitive nature of political discourse in India, especially during election season. Kharge’s remarks intended to draw a contrast between the electorates of different states have raised questions about respectful political dialogue.
