Punjab Minister Addresses Stubble Burning Concerns and Farmer Welfare

Impact of Stubble Burning on Farmers and Citizens

Punjab Minister Dr. Balbir Singh expressed deep concern regarding the practice of stubble burning, highlighting its detrimental effects on both farmers and the general population. In a recent statement, he noted that while the impact of smoke from stubble burning on Delhi’s air quality is a topic of debate, the immediate concern remains the health of common people who are forced to breathe contaminated air. “We all have to breathe the same air. Whether or not (air) pollution goes to Delhi is a matter of debate. But the farmer who is burning stubble is the first one to get affected,” said Singh.

Singh’s remarks focus on the broader implications of agricultural practices on local communities, emphasizing the urgent need for effective solutions to combat air pollution resulting from stubble burning. The minister’s comments coincide with rising concerns over air quality and health issues related to pollution in the region.

In light of the ongoing challenges, the Punjab government is also working on restoring the rule of law, alongside addressing issues relevant to farmer welfare. Singh’s commentary included remarks about Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann’s approval to pursue legal action against Dera chief Ram Rahim Singh concerning a blasphemy case from 2015. “Punjab government has restored the rule of law and the law will take its course,” he stated, reaffirming the government’s commitment to justice and order.

Need for Union Government Support for Farmers

Dr. Balbir Singh stressed the crucial need for the Union government to support farmers, particularly regarding the procurement and lifting of paddy crops. He underscored the concerns regarding grain weight loss that may occur due to moisture loss, emphasizing that these issues require attention from the central authorities. Singh argued that the Punjab government is committed to safeguarding farmer interests, stating, “It is the time when the Union government should stand with the farmers. The negligence is from the Union Govt’s side,” while also highlighting the collaborative efforts necessary among Punjab government, Arhtiyas, and farmers to tackle current challenges.

Singh also mentioned that the Chief Minister had raised these issues directly with the Union Agriculture Minister, indicating ongoing discussions at various levels of government to address the agricultural and environmental concerns impacting farmers in Punjab.

Responses to Rising Air Pollution in Delhi

Earlier, the Delhi government pointed fingers at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) administrations in neighboring states such as Uttar Pradesh and Haryana for the increasing pollution levels in Delhi attributed to stubble burning. Delhi Chief Minister Atishi Marlena highlighted that the deteriorating Air Quality Index (AQI) in Delhi is exacerbated by the failure to effectively manage stubble burning practices within these states. This blame underlines the inter-state challenges faced in addressing environmental issues linked to agriculture.

As discussions continue regarding governance and environmental policies, the focus remains on the health of both the farmers and the citizens impacted by stubble burning practices and pollution in the region.
