Government Defers Maintenance of Coal Power Plants Amid Gas Supply Shortages
Maintenance Shutdowns Postponed
The Indian government has postponed the planned maintenance shutdown for 10 gigawatts (GW) of coal-based power generation capacity by three months. This decision aims to maintain a stable supply of electricity in light of gas supply limitations caused by the ongoing conflict in West Asia.
A maintenance shutdown is a scheduled interruption of operations at a power plant, conducted to perform essential repairs, inspections, and upgrades that are not feasible while the facility is operational. According to a recent inter-ministerial briefing regarding the crisis in West Asia, Piyush Singh, the additional secretary at the Ministry of Power, reported that approximately 8 GW of gas-based generation capacity has been affected due to rising fuel costs associated with the conflict in Iran.
Impact on Coal Capacity
Of the 15 GW of coal-based capacity initially slated for maintenance during this period, only 5 GW will proceed with their scheduled maintenance. The remaining 10 GW will remain operational to assist in the energy supply during this challenging time.
Plans for Capacity Expansion
In response to the ongoing energy challenges, the government has also laid out a strategy to expand power generation capacity by an additional 22 GW over the next three months. This plan includes the addition of various energy sources: 3.5 GW of thermal power, 10 GW of solar, 2.5 GW of wind power, 1.9 GW from Battery Energy Storage Systems, 3.4 GW from wind and solar hybrid projects, along with 750 MW of hydropower, and 250 MW from pumped hydro storage.
Role of Gas in Energy Mix
While gas constitutes only a minor portion of India’s overall power generation mix, it is essential during peak evening demand periods when solar energy output declines. The government has indicated it plans to pivot towards “alternative sources,” particularly coal-based generation, to compensate for the reduced gas availability.
