Congress Plans Opposition Meeting to Address Women’s Reservation Law Amendment

Congress Reiterates Support for Women’s Reservation

Following a recent meeting of its Working Committee, the Indian National Congress has reaffirmed its endorsement of the women’s reservation law but has expressed strong opposition to any delimitation efforts without the completion of a fresh census. The Congress party intends to convene a gathering of senior leaders from all INDIA bloc parties on April 15 to strategize on this pressing issue.

Speaking at a press conference at the Congress headquarters in New Delhi, general secretary for communications Jairam Ramesh emphasized that the core issue at hand is not merely women’s reservation but the complicated matter of delimitation, particularly due to the lack of informative details surrounding it.

Opposition Meeting Planned Ahead of Parliamentary Sessions

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge is expected to lead the meeting of opposition leaders on April 15, just before the parliamentary sessions set to commence on April 16. The purpose of this meeting is to discuss future strategies as they approach the parliamentary agenda. Ramesh criticized the Centre’s proposed special session, alleging it aims to sway electoral outcomes in states like Tamil Nadu and West Bengal.

He further remarked that the organization of an all-party meeting could easily be postponed until after April 29, post the West Bengal Assembly elections, stating, “The heavens are not going to fall if the all-party meeting is called after April 29.” He underscored the significance of the issue concerning delimitation, highlighting its potential long-term ramifications.

Congress Leaders Address Recent Developments

The CWC meeting, chaired by Kharge, included key leaders like Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, general secretaries Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, K C Venugopal, and Sachin Pilot, along with Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, Telangana Chief Minister A Revanth Reddy, and former Punjab Chief Minister Charanjit Singh Channi.

Concerns Raised Over Proposed Delimitation Exercise

In his opening speech during the CWC session, Kharge warned that the government’s planned delimitation effort to facilitate the women’s reservation law could lead to “grave consequences.” He emphasized that the opposition would develop a unified approach in collaboration with other party members to address the situation effectively.

According to Kharge, the Narendra Modi administration’s decision to reconvene Parliament from April 16 appears motivated by political gain, which he claims constitutes a breach of the Model Code of Conduct. He voiced concerns over the government’s haste to pass the Constitutional Amendment Bill.

Moreover, Kharge mentioned that despite the urgency communicated by the Prime Minister, the Congress party has yet to receive any formal proposals from the government regarding these vital amendments. The discussion on providing 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies is slated for a session scheduled between April 16 and 18, which he criticized as being politically driven.
