Prime Video and Amazon MX Player Join Forces to Create India’s Largest Streaming Service
Integration Overview
In a significant move within India’s streaming sector, Prime Video has merged with Amazon MX Player, resulting in what the company claims to be the largest streaming platform in the country. This combined service is set to offer both exclusive originals and a diverse selection of free and paid entertainment.
The integration allows users to benefit from Prime Video’s subscription-based content library while also accessing Amazon MX Player’s extensive ad-supported offerings. This will enable viewers to enjoy a unified platform providing a mix of Subscription Video on Demand (SVOD), Advertising Video on Demand (AVOD), Transactional Video on Demand (TVOD), and additional subscription options.
Background of the Merger
This merger follows Amazon’s acquisition of certain assets from MX Player in 2024, which were subsequently combined with Amazon miniTV to form Amazon MX Player. The service gained quick popularity by focusing on local original programming, reality shows, micro-dramas, and dubbed international series.
As a result of this integration, Prime members will have greater access to a vast catalogue of original content across various devices. Users will have the flexibility to choose between watching content with advertisements or opting for an ad-free experience. For viewers seeking free entertainment, an extensive range of ad-supported content will remain available, providing seamless options to subscribe to Prime.
Executive Commentary on the Integration
Gaurav Gandhi, Vice President for Asia-Pacific and ANZ at Prime Video, emphasized the importance of this integration, stating, “Our focus at Prime Video has always been to bring authentic stories that reflect the diversity of our audiences. With the integration of Amazon MX Player’s expansive original slate and audience scale, our collective offering is bigger and stronger than ever — making Prime Video the one-stop destination for quality entertainment for every customer in the country.”
He further noted that the merger with Amazon MX Player would allow Prime Video to enhance its library by adding significant engagement levels through a diverse range of content. This aims to ensure customers have access to the largest selection of exclusive and original entertainment from India and beyond.
Advertising Opportunities
The merger is anticipated to broaden advertising opportunities on the platform significantly. Girish Prabhu, Vice President & Head of Amazon Ads India, referred to the unification as a “gamechanger” for advertisers. He explained, “The unification of Amazon MX Player with Prime Video is a gamechanger for advertisers in India. We’ve created a single streaming destination that reaches audiences across the entire spectrum — from free ad-supported viewers to Prime members — enabling true full-funnel advertising on an unprecedented scale.”
He added that advertisers will have access to the most relevant and effective ad formats, leveraging extensive data from shopping, browsing, and streaming behaviors, thereby transforming each impression into measurable business outcomes.
User Experience and Accessibility
As part of this rollout, the Amazon MX Player application for Android will continue to cater to free streaming users under a rebranded identity, complete with an integrated Prime Video experience. Users will have the option to upgrade to Prime subscriptions for enhanced access to content. The iOS, web, and Living Room versions of the app will redirect users to Prime Video, where content from both platforms will be accessible.
Currently, Prime Video offers a range of acclaimed Indian and international originals, while Amazon MX Player is well-established in the free streaming landscape with its varied catalogue. This integration is seen as an effort by Amazon to fortify its presence in India’s dynamic OTT ecosystem, appealing to both premium subscribers and free-streaming viewers from a singular entertainment platform.
Related Developments
In addition to this major merger, Amazon has been active in producing various content, including web series and reality shows. Recent celebrity appearances at trailer launches and events have also been noted, showcasing the growing prominence of OTT platforms in Indian entertainment.
