Petrol prices have risen by Rs 2.61 per litre, while diesel prices have increased by Rs 2.71 per litre as of Monday, marking the fourth increase within a span of less than two weeks.
The latest adjustments follow a prior rise of up to 91 paise per litre on Saturday. This was noted as the third increase, with prices previously raised by Rs 3 per litre on May 15, followed by another increase of 90 paise on May 19.
Impact of Global Events
These price hikes are partially attributed to the financial pressure on state-run oil marketing companies in India, primarily due to the ongoing conflict in West Asia. This war has resulted in significant disruptions, including the closure of the Strait of Hormuz, which is a vital route for approximately one-fifth of the global oil supply. The situation has created a worldwide crisis affecting oil markets.
Since March 2026, crude oil prices have surged significantly as a consequence of these global tensions.
Political Context
Despite these price adjustments, the increase in fuel costs was delayed until mid-May following the assembly elections held in four states and one union territory in late April, with results announced on May 4.
The oil price adjustments began only after this political period ended, with the first increase occurring on May 15.
