Kerala Assembly Elections: UDF Poised for Return, CM Contender Debate Heats Up

Key Figures in the Contention

With preliminary results indicating a potential victory for the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) in the Kerala Assembly elections, the spotlight is now on who will assume the role of Chief Minister. Three senior leaders are currently vying for the position: Opposition Leader V D Satheesan, former Opposition Leader Ramesh Chennithala, and All India Congress Committee (AICC) General Secretary K C Venugopal. While Venugopal is not contesting in this election, Chennithala is reportedly leading by over 7,000 votes in the Haripad constituency, while Satheesan has a narrow lead of just over 1,000 votes from the Paravur seat.

Shift in Power Dynamics

This election cycle marks a notable shift in the Congress power dynamics in Kerala, in contrast to previous years when the competition largely involved state leaders. The inclusion of K C Venugopal, a significant figure within the Congress high command, has introduced a new dimension to the competition. Historically, during instances where the Congress was in power at the Centre, the party’s leadership would manage rivalries among senior figures by offering them positions in the central government. For example, K Karunakaran was rewarded with a Cabinet role in 1995 when he made way for A K Antony as Chief Minister, and similarly, Oommen Chandy was given a prominent role after Antony’s resignation in 2004. However, with the Congress currently out of power at the Centre, the contest for the Chief Minister position has heightened significance.

Leaders’ Perspectives and Campaigns

According to a senior Congress leader, there is considerable confidence among the supporters of each contender regarding their ability to secure the Chief Minister role. Public opinion seems to favor Satheesan, given his leadership of the UDF over the past five years in opposition to the Pinarayi Vijayan administration. However, the loyalty of the majority of Congress MLA candidates lies with Venugopal, as he played a crucial role in their selection. Meanwhile, Chennithala, as the senior-most leader, also remains a strong candidate, especially due to his long-standing association with the Nehru-Gandhi family.

Chennithala had been the designated Chief Ministerial candidate in the previous 2021 election, which concluded with the LDF maintaining its control over the state. In a bid to strengthen his position as a significant contender this time, he has launched a new podcast titled “Kerala Yatra.” This podcast aims to serve as a platform for sharing his developmental vision for Kerala and recounting his political journey, emphasizing his connections to the Nehru-Gandhi family and his challenges against the LDF.

On the other hand, Venugopal, who serves as a Lok Sabha member from Alappuzha, has taken a measured approach, avoiding direct engagement in the discussions about his potential candidacy. He stated, “I am not interested in the debates. Let the result come. There is a process. Wait till the counting of votes.” Earlier this month, he also published a book titled “Alongside Truth: Struggles and Positions,” featuring a collection of his speeches delivered in various assemblies.

Support Dynamics Among Candidates

Several Congress MLA candidates have expressed support for Venugopal, sometimes subtly and at other times more openly. First-time candidate Vidya Balakrishnan, running in the Elathur seat in Kozhikode, emphasized Venugopal’s organizational capabilities and his vital role in leading the party. Senior Congress leader Ajay Tharayil also publicly supported Venugopal’s candidacy, advocating for a Chief Minister who has risen through grassroots struggles.

If Venugopal is chosen for the Chief Minister position despite not being a current MLA, the party would need to facilitate a resignation from an existing legislator to allow him to contest for a seat, thus triggering a by-election for his Alappuzha Lok Sabha seat.

Satheesan’s supporters have already begun to promote him as the candidate for Chief Minister, despite a lack of overt public endorsements from sitting MLAs. Observers note that the silence among the MLAs may stem from a desire to avoid antagonizing Venugopal, who is an integral part of the high command. Nevertheless, some believe Satheesan will eventually garner support from various factions, particularly due to his leadership over the past five years.

A source within Congress has stated that the contest for the Chief Minister position is unlikely to cause divisions within the party, assuring that the high command’s ultimate decision will consider the party’s unity in the state. This contrasts with leadership contests seen in other regions.
