Centre Reduces Vodafone Idea AGR Dues By About 27% To Rs 64,046 Crore

Government Decision on AGR Dues

The Government of India has announced a reduction in the adjusted gross revenue (AGR) dues of Vodafone Idea by approximately 27%, bringing the total liability down to Rs 64,046 crore. This adjustment follows a reassessment of the statutory dues based on a decision made by the Department of Telecom (DoT).

The revised dues are payable over a period of ten years, commencing from the fiscal year 2031-32 and extending to FY 2040-41. The company is expected to clear the final dues in two separate installments spread over this decade-long timeline.

Details of the Reassessment

According to a filing made by Vodafone Idea, the DoT had initially frozen the AGR dues as of December 31, 2025, at Rs 87,695 crore. However, this amount underwent reassessment by a specially constituted committee under the DoT, which has now approved the reduced figure of Rs 64,046 crore as the final dues.

The company has noted that the communication regarding the reassessed dues was sent by the DoT on April 30, 2026, indicating that the committee had completed its review. This decision is critical for Vodafone Idea as it continues to navigate financial challenges while working on its operational stability.

Payment Schedule and Obligations

As per the filing, Vodafone Idea will be required to make its payments in two distinct phases. The first phase involves a minimum annual payment of Rs 100 crore for the initial four years, specifically from FY 2031-32 to FY 2034-35.

Following the initial phase, the remaining balance will be paid in six equal installments annually from FY 2035-36 to FY 2040-41. This structured approach aims to facilitate the company’s financial planning as it addresses its obligations while aiming to strengthen its market position in the telecom sector.

Context and Industry Impact

The reduction of Vodafone Idea’s AGR dues comes at a crucial time as the company has been grappling with significant financial challenges. These adjustments in dues are considered pivotal for the telecom operator, which has been facing intense competition and evolving market dynamics in India.

The decision may also have implications for the broader telecom industry, as it reflects the government’s ongoing efforts to create a more conducive environment for operators while ensuring compliance with regulatory frameworks. The restructuring of AGR dues may provide Vodafone Idea with a necessary reprieve as it looks to stabilize its operations moving forward.
