R Ashwin Supports Hardik Pandya Amidst Form Struggles
Performance Reflection
Former Indian spinner R Ashwin has expressed confidence in Hardik Pandya’s ability to regain form with the bat following a recent victory by the Mumbai Indians (MI) over the Gujarat Titans. This win, which marked a 99-run triumph in Ahmedabad, is expected to help Pandya, the team’s captain, recover from a challenging stretch where MI lost four consecutive matches.
Ashwin noted that Pandya’s batting struggles could be attributed to the pressure he faced as captain. He emphasized that this recent victory could serve as a catalyst for Pandya to unlock his potential with the bat. “Remember that Hardik Pandya is yet to open up with the bat. He will also start opening up with the bat. It is just a matter of one innings. If he gets a good hit in one innings, it will be very difficult to stop this team. If this team starts firing, it will become very difficult to stop them,” he commented on his YouTube channel.
Current Season Insights
In the ongoing IPL 2026 season, Pandya has accumulated only 96 runs across five matches. Additionally, he missed a prior game against the Delhi Capitals earlier in the month. In the match against GT, Pandya contributed 15 runs and took one wicket for 18 runs. Ashwin believes that the confidence gained from the MI victory may inspire Pandya to find his rhythm with the bat in upcoming matches.
Opening Combination Suggestions
Ashwin also shared his thoughts on MI’s batting lineup, suggesting that the team should consider an opening partnership between Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock once Sharma is fully fit. He acknowledged that the team has good talent but emphasized the need for consistency at the top of the order. “This win was important for MI, and also important for the IPL. See, they have a good team, and the way MI were losing with this team, they would have been really upset about it,” he stated.
Ashwin highlighted de Kock’s essential role in the team, asserting that his presence in the lineup is crucial, even when Sharma returns: “When you have Quinton de Kock, you have to continue with him even after Rohit Sharma comes in. I agree Rickelton is a very good player, but de Kock is de Kock. That is the absolute bottom line. Rohit Sharma and Quinton de Kock will form a very strong opening combination,” he explained.
Upcoming Matches
Following their recent victory, MI currently sits in seventh place on the IPL points table. The team is set to face the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), who occupy the eighth position, at home on Thursday. MI has struggled in recent encounters with CSK, having won only one out of their last five meetings. This match presents an opportunity for MI to build momentum as they aim to improve their standing in the league.
